It's not great. Hope it's just the odd song on the album.

I pretty much agree, aside from the "always praying" quasi-scream before the last chorus. eddy just cant pull that off any more.. no power whatsoever. even the studio couldn't help him. he needs to abandon that.

all that said, I like the song. very happy to hear that eddy's annoyed again.

i'm really liking this one. Eddie seems to channel several of his best vocal features here and, me not being a McCready apologist, i find the lead guitar work on this fucking badass, refreshing and, for PJ, different - very metal. as for the song itself, i haven't read the lyrics yet but themes seem to be heavier than what you'd expect from a "simple punk-rock ditty". the composition is a bit of all over the place yet it holds together quite well. a few relatively banal moments such as the instrumental bit at 1:06 but the vocals lift it up and add an interresting touch.

dare i say that it's cut from the same cloth as Olé's but with much more heart put into it? yeah, i do. but i like Olé (i think it's an ok song with interresting moments, nothing more but i don't really listen to it on purpose).

i'd be pretty disappointed if the album was made of songs that all sound like this but i know that it won,t happen - a pretty good band performance, inspired playing (Matt is solid on this), dubious mastering...i can't tell just yet but i agree with whoever said it lacked the ambience of their best albums. having said that, bear in mind that Matt is a very very tight and loud drummer - i think it could have something to do with the aural perception of today's PJ versus the loose era of Jack or the wild one of Dave.

anyway, i'm still digesting this...

Okay, after two days, here's my stab at the lyrics:

I've got an unfortunate feeling
I've been beaten down
I feel I'm done believing and
Now the truth is coming out
What they've taking is more than a bow (could very well be 'vow,' can't tell for certain)
They've taken your innocence and then they go around and burn and violate it (still not sure about this line, but it's close enough)

All along they're saying

Mind Your Manners

I caught myself believing
That I needed God
And if it's out there somewhere
We sure could use it now
Tried my patience
My patience tried
This world's no longer good enough, makes me want to cry

All along they're saying
Mind your manners
Someone say it (again, not positive, but it's in the ballpark, I think)

Self realized and metaphysically redeemed
May not live another life
May not solve our mystery
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves
We could will it to the sky
Or we could something real (still not sure, but I'm hearing either "real" or "live," it's the "something" I'm not sure about)

All along they're saying
Mind your manners
Always praying

Self realized and metaphysically redeemed
May not live another life
May not solve our mystery
Right around the corner could be bigger than ourselves
We could will it to the sky
Or we could something real

Go to heaven!
That's swell!
How do you like your
Living hell?!

LIVING HELL!

Really? I found that line to be super clear. Is there a specific part of it you're not sold on, or any of it?

on my first listens I heard something like 'slowly realizing that I'm physically redeemed. ' I don't think that's it either, but I think we settled on this lyric maybe too quickly. I can't listen right now but I'll try and post later what I think it might be.

The very first listen (when I wasn't specifically listening to the words), I though it was "Self-realizing that I'm physically redeemed," so I can get the second half of what you're saying (though when I listened for the words it seemed obvious he was saying "metaphysically redeemed"). I dunno, the "Self-realized" just sounds really clear to me.

My first listen had it "self realized and I'm physically fatigued"
But on one listen with headphones I think it is clearly the metaphysically redeemed line.

it's better than several lead singles this band has put out imo:
- Tha Fixah
- WWS
- ambivalent about I Am Mine
- not better than NAIS musically, better lyrically (from what i've read)
- not as good as GTF
- neither as good as WYA
- better than STBC but close
- not as good as Daughter
- not as emblematic as Alive, not even close but this is a different band

i'm pretty sure it won't make a dent in the charts.

Agree. Ed can make or break the "punkier" songs, I think he nails this one. The bridge is def my favorite part.

BTW thanks for taking crack at the lyrics durden, must say I'm diggin' the song even more now...
