I certainly wasn't criticizing. I love both songs. Though, if I'm honest, I like SH a tad more. Again, because of the vocal melody and lyrical imagery.

I'm not a musician. I play a bit of guitar but I'm not a musician. All I know is that when I listen to the opening guitar riff of Porch followed immediately by the opening riff of Severed Hand, they sound the same; I recognize one in the other. Which is not to say the songs are identical, just that those opening riffs absolutely sound like each other. From that point on the songs don't sound the same to these untrained ears.

And I never would have even noticed any similarity if I hadn't played the two back to back with a musician in the room to talk to about the songs. I played them in an effort to demonstrate how different they sound, and marveled at how wrong I was.

Again, not a criticism, just an observation.

In general I find the pompous self-satisfaction that some people attain from pointing out an artist repeating even the simplest of ideas to be completely obnoxious.

I quite agree. Even my musician friend who pointed out the similarities between the two said both songs were cool and he doesn't care if an artist "rips themselves off."

And, though I'm not a huge Metallica fan, I really enjoyed what they did with Unforgiven 2 (I know that's not what we're talking about here, but still).

Same goes for Give to Fly and Going to California. Fine, they have similarities. But they're very different songs.
