Ah. I had considered that, but Protools wasn't out in the early to mid 90s tho, right?

Point is, Cornell used to sing amazing, and certainly there were some tape splices to get the best possible vocal comp. But I'd imagine that King Animal is fairly tweaked to cover up his age.
I figured on that one.

Yeah. I mean, he can still sing. He still has the pipes. But he can't control it as well (this part of his game started to fade in 1994-1995) and he's really inconsistent on a nightly basis when it comes to his high notes. He can still hit them in the studio with a lot of practice and repetition but some nights on stage it's just not there. He's like Ed, except he's not getting drunk and smoking so he has a lot more of his voice left.

Speaking of his singing, I found a couple of vids of them doing Birth Ritual last year. They may have tuned down for it but I don't think they did. He sang it an octave lower in places and sang harmony notes in others and just totally changed the melody in others. Nowhere did he attempt at all the original vocals. Took a while to get used to, but still enjoyed it.

Yeah, I saw them last year and thought Birth Ritual sounded great.

Is it wrong that I'm enjoying Soundgarden more right now than I am Pearl Jam?

I watched a live version of "Birth Ritual" on Rolling Stone's website and thought it was pretty bad. Chris still has some pipes but that song...whew.

No, not at all.

He was. Watch interviews with him throughout the 90s and he often has a cigarette in hand.

I'll have to look for the article, but I remember reading that he quit cigs circa 2005-ish (Out of Exile timeframe). Then a few years later around the time he recorded Carry On he said he actually took vocal lessons to help preserve his pipes. While he'll never harness the power he had in his youth (I mean who does, really?), the steps he's taken to improve his vocals since the Audioslave days have paid off ten fold. He sounded excellent on Higher Truth, the songs are arguably a different matter....but I CAN'T WAIT to hear him on the new SG album that's in the works. If we get one song, just one song as good as A Thousand Days Before on the next release, I'll be satisfied.

Has Eddie actually quit them?
