I actually find Getaway at least head bob (not o'brien) worthy so maybe I'm a little bias here.

I just got married in Outer Banks, NC and spent four days on the beach. I can really see his fascination with the ocean, and for someone who spends as much time out there as he seems to, it makes sense how many waves/water/earth lyrics he writes.

He should probably cut to the chase and start writing radio jingles and / or nursery rhymes. I don't see any "difficulty" in Pearl Jam's work either. I see a massive climb down the maturity ladder in Backspacer. I'm sorry, I enjoy it for what it is, but it's an album that would've been made by people thirty years younger.

'Simple' does not have to mean 'immature'. In fact, I found that generally, while people in their twenties seem to be pretty sure about almost everything, people in their thirties are doubting a lot, people in their fourties find some kind of peace, allowing themselves to be silly, because who cares about being laughed about? That's not what is important in life.
And from another angle: to me, the best songs were punk, and people always accused the Ramones of being too simple, while that is exactly what I love. Like the Beatles; you don't need to make complete constructions to get feelings accross. Then on the other side of the spectrum there was prog rock, with lyrics that you need math for to find the structure of the sentences and dictionaries to find out what the words mean. They need at least 10 minutes while punk needs less than 3. And when you don't like it, people say 'you don't understand'. I know, there is beauty and intelligence in all kinds of music, regardless of the genre. But this is what I always think of when people start talking about 'difficulty' in music.

Thank you somebody for saying this. The guy is excited about a new record and he gets nitpicked for it on here. Fucking unreal.

I don't think I ever said I wasn't excited about the new record. I can't wait. I just had a temporary "dancing dad" feeling about this bit. I'm not actually insulting Ed, more the whole concept of the "rocking out in the car" scene. It was a directorial choice I didn't like much. Ed doesn't need defending from this.

You ever see the iconoclasts episode with ed in? Entire thing is unintentionally hilarious. There's a bit with ed and the dude listening to big wave I think in the car.

"I'm still alive" means something emotionally potent, and is a great summation of the verses. Same with "I'd rather be with an animal." They're both defiant, balls-to-the-wall statements. "She's a lightning bolt" isn't really, and neither does it really drag you into the verses to find the depth therein. The problem is that on a casual listen, "Lightning Bolt!" is the kind of chorus that'll put someone off from delving deeper, and it's had that effect already for a lot of people on this forum. When Eddie sang "I'm still alive", we wanted to know why. When Eddie sang "I'd rather be with an animal", we wanted to know why.

I want to know who or what this lightning bolt is, and if it is bad or good, in the end. So, there is a question in it at least. And yes, it may seem shallow to scream along "lightning boooolt", but there are so many more 'embarrassing' lyrics to sing along with. That's part of the fun for me. "like Pilate I have a dog", or "All my rivals will see what I have in store, my gun"

I haven't seen it but I can imagine. It's just another example of the dumbing down. They wouldn't have done that in an EPK for any album between No Code and Riot Act.

The Big Wave lyrics are terrible. If Lightning Bolt is a song about surfing (which it is, partly) it's miles and miles better than Big Wave. BW is a "You'd get it if you were a surfer" kind of song.

Love Big Wave. It's got a a great tempo and gets the listener rocking out and wanting to go back and hit repeat. You're clearly a stickler for lyrics, I'm only a stickler when the song draws attention to it. Big Wave is more about the melody and pace, and the lyrics supplement just fine w/ nice little rhyming patterns. Great way to move the album forward. Too bad Gone doesn't come through in a stronger way.

I love Big Wave as well. It is very uplifting.
