Overall, this album is definitely not my thing. Worse than every Pearl Jam album, except maybe LB, and even that would be close. I'm really surprised this is getting as much love here as it is. Sounds like every worst part of Pearl Jam over the last 10-15 years. No mood, no atmosphere, no mystery. Drums are boring, guitars are thin except for a few fuzzed out parts, think I heard one cool bass part, a lot of Eddie's annoying vocal tics and a lot of hootin and hollerin. I may never listen to this ever again. Long live Pearl Jam.

That first song is pretty awful, it's shooting for 80s Peter Gabriel but there's no compelling musical idea to carry the pastiche through (not dissimilar to Long Way's Tom Petty-isms).

I think you have gotten at why I dig it. It's arguably as good or better than lower shelf Pearl Jam, and even better than that is the fact that Ed has an outlet for these impulses, so the good stuff and other band members can be more properly distilled into fine, fine Pearl Jam music.

this is absolutely a pop album, but as someone who enjoys a lot of polished pop, I feel that this is a pop album done right: entertaining ear candy over in a flash

I'd take Dua Lipa's and Miley Cyrus's latest albums over this.

I obviously don't know what Ed's motivation was for this, but it really does sound to me like Ed getting out some of his more spritzy and light impulses into a succinct space, hopefully so that Pearl Jam can be Pearl Jam

Yeah, I mean, I like this largely because Eddie is my favorite singer of all time, there are some goods songs here, and I specifically didn't have any Pearl Jam-level expectations for it. It's pretty good, and that's enough for me to like it a lot.

There is absolutely a possible version of Pearl Jam that I would enjoy and rare glimpses of that band still appear, even on the last few albums.
