There's not much similarity in that one either.

What if I told you...evenslow wrote: People love to do the gotcha game of derivation. And maybe it's just me, but I've never heard more than a 10% similarity in GTF and GTC. I try but it's not there. Totally overblown.
even the band thinks it's there

I'd tell you the band also says every new album is their best work.theplatypus wrote:What if I told you...evenslow wrote: People love to do the gotcha game of derivation. Yeah, I know Mike has said that it's there but I think most of that is him being humble and employing some CYA cuz he wrote it. I honestly don't hear it much at all.theplatypus wrote:What if I told you...evenslow wrote: People love to do the gotcha game of derivation. It's four notes, a simple descent down the most basic of scales. And even then there are tons of variations in the songs to set them apart. What are you hearing exactly?theplatypus wrote:I think it's clear as day.Kevin Davis wrote:There's not much similarity in that one either.

It wasn't, but I'd say the same thing applies. I agree that part sounds pretty much identical, but it's two power chords. 5000 teenagers probably come up with that exact same riff every day.elliseamos wrote:is this responding to my post?Kevin Davis wrote:There's not much similarity in that one either.

Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
Mike's playing and Ed's vocals very closely mirror the main verse melody (and some of the harmony) in the Zeppelin song. This doesn't make it the same song-- they head in totally different directions. But to say "there's no similarity" feels a bit disingenuous. Clearly, it's there, people can hear it, Mike and Stone have commented on it, the band seemed to acknowledge it when they segued from GTF into the Zeppelin song with Robert Plant. I agree people go overboard with the need to point out even the slightest similarities (like the chord change in "Supersonic"-- "OH GOD IT'S A MANKIND REHASH"), but in this case I don't think that's what's happening.Kevin Davis wrote:It's four notes, a simple descent down the most basic of scales. To your point, I laughed when Ed (on a 2000 boot?) called introduced the song as Give To Fly To California.theplatypus wrote:Mike's playing and Ed's vocals very closely mirror the main verse melody (and some of the harmony) in the Zeppelin song. Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
Also, Jorge, sort of on this same topic, but not really, do you think Ament's Doubting Thomasina sounds at all like an Elvis Costello song? Not a specific song, just a song in the vein of Elvis Costello?

Re: 10th album rumors and speculation
The verse riff on Marker in the Sand always reminds me of Elvis Costello, in a good way. Jagged, angular, angry - in the ballpark of (I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea.durdencommatyler wrote:Also, Jorge, sort of on this same topic, but not really, do you think Ament's Doubting Thomasina sounds at all like an Elvis Costello song? The first of his songs to make me realize what I'd been missing. Still one of my favs to this day.evenslow wrote:The verse riff on Marker in the Sand always reminds me of Elvis Costello, in a good way.
