I was 24 and starting my first year of grad school. Yeah, that was my senior year of HS, it was pretty brutal looking back. Nickelback, Hoobastank, etc.stip wrote:I was just looking at the top rock hits of 2001. What a horrid fucking year

Yeah, I don't find it that odd - though I was similarly baffled that he hadn't heard Common People, that song was more culturally significant and seems more likely to be referred back to in music writing, etc.
I'm pretty much completely oblivious to any kind of popular culture I don't actively seek out. Until a few weeks ago, I'm pretty sure I hadn't heard a single Katy Perry song. It's just not something I come into contact with as I very rarely listen to the radio (and, on the rare occasions I do, it's only ever classical or jazz) and don't really go anywhere modern music would cross my path. Perhaps I might occasionally hear something while grocery shopping but that's about it.
My daughters aren't yet at the stage where they introduce me to things but I can expect that might change once they're older. Thus far they haven't shown any particular interest in My Little Pony or Frozen, thankfully (it's all Wizard of Oz, all the time over here.)

You are definitely more in touch with mainstream media at 17-18 than at 25-26.

I wasn't familiar with that Gorillaz track either. Was also in grad school that year. That shit was not being played in Waco, Texas while I was around.

I remember seeing Gorillaz clips but never really hearing them. Was probably listening to Fear Factory Opeth Katatonia Fantomas etc.

And Varis can float by and drop a selection any ol' time.
