The best thing that could ever have happened to this band is to meet a fanboy producer capable of encouraging their creative idiosyncrasies while simultaneously culling together a sonically rich album almost entirely from first takes.
What are the odds.

You said it best, he was able to do what O'Brien, Blake and Kasper (though Kasper did come close). Even though I think this is it for the band. I'd love to see one more album with this guy.

So producer power rankings? How the hell would someone handle B O'B?
For me:
1. Evans (small sample size, but we work with what we've got)
2. Parashar
3. O'Brien
4. Blake
5. Kasper
Evans has a pretty unblemished record, but nudges out Parashar for covering a wider range and pulling the best out of a much older and less fresh act.
Parashar produced a fantastic album of its time. I can't really give him a whole lot of negatives here.
O'Brien is responsible for some of the best and definitely the worst. Middle of the road.
I can't say much negative about Blake, but we ended up getting so little of him. Feels like he didn't have much power.
Kasper did very nicely with parts of Riot Act (I love the production on "Thumbing My Way") but many hate his production of S-T.

Yeah, Josh work is fucking awesome. And he knows the band, is a real fan...and made them sound super awesome.
BOB made brillant albums but his approach with LB and he messed with the compositions so much, i dont want him back.
Tchad Blake made a brillant album, i would love more stuff with him. Adam Kasper is fine, but i prefer josh all the way.

Would love them to try and nail “of the earth” with Josh Evans.
I’m sure they recorded more than the 12 songs. Hopefully we get to hear them in some form in the near future.

AND that they somehow stumbled into this new way of working and recording in their own warehouse in a piecemeal, relaxing fashion. It really is incredible when you step back and think about it.

It sounds like Evans was bought in to help hone the demos, as he's always done, but there came a point where they figured it was sounding good enough for an album so it just segued into that.
Anyone hoping for some massive fallout with B'OB is probably going to be disappointed.

yeah, that seems to be the overall reason, but also the timing with the vicky cornell stuff is kinda weird.

Vitalogy is #1 on my list but I would understand. If you are not keen on tracks like Pry, To or Aye Davanita, Stupid Mop, Bugs,etc. the album would come off as uneven. If you you take them in stride as part of the listening experience then the album is 100% epic. I fall in the latter category but I know many who don’t.

I love Vitalogy of course. But that ranking is whats happening these days...i dont feel compelled to listen to those songs, and to the album as whole.
My rankings always change, maybe next month Vitalogy is number 3.

2020 has basically memory holed this album already. Kind of funny that they drug their feet for the better part of a decade and then finally dropped an album during the year they wouldn't be able to tour and people are busy worrying about life instead of wordy slogs like Sloven my Cock.

I fall into the prior category, and wishwishwish that those all those tracks except AD were left off. That way, it would have been a very nice short album.

Right here. Creatively, they did their thing as always, although had their own studio this time. They make demos alone and little groups. I think Stone's comments on the end of the process being the breakthrough is really it. I think that's the case with alot of their albums. For the last few, it's the decisions they made at the end - tightening, mixing, sequencing, selecting songs, leaving others off that made the biggest difference.

I don't know if there was 'massive fallout' with BOB, but he was the producer on Can't Deny Me, and that was going to be included on an upcoming album. Apparently, at one point the plan was for Brendan to be behind the boards for this one. My assumption as to why it fell through is the band realized they wanted to work at home and stretch the recording process over a longer period of time, neither of which are things O'Brien seems to be interested in.

Pearl Jam insisted that Vicky Cornell sing on Gigaton but Brendan O'Brien said 'no'
