I really hope they perform Sirens at the Grammy's while wearing Target shirts and then Ed gives a tearful acceptance speech while shouting out Ticketmaster just so we can watch the board die.

Thus revealing thier entire career was an elaborate troll on RM?

I'm beginning to think they might've been a classic rock band this entire time without any trendy veneer, if it wasn't for expectations. They seem really happy playing the unsurprising stuff.

Honestly, they got lucky with Ten.

I don't see how this stuff or song rather, is any more classic rock than thier older stuff. I've always seen them as a straight up rock band, branching into different aspects rock sometimes I guess but yeah.

Is classic rock even a genre? Isn't it just rock that due to time has become considered classic? Or does it mean 70s esque?

It means lots of things, but I'd say classic rock is definitely a genre. I think PJ were always basically a classic rock band but as I say, it was usually behind a grunge / hard rock / "alternative" veneer. You'd struggle to classify them as alternative anything now but that wasn't always the case; through their career, they've gradually sloughed that skin.

Put the Sirens down, then, and come back to it when you're in the mood. No need to kill it.

It's just on XM a lot. I have started changing the channel when it comes on, but that's something I don't do with MYM.

Ten is a giant classic rock album. They always were that.

They just had the good sense and ability to branch out and color their sound with different influences over the years.

Yeah but Sirens is a different kind of song. It's a ballad and quite melodramatic. I couldn't even listen to Black thousands of times in a row. MYM just comes and then goes in a noisy flash.

I still maintain that they were louder / heavier and more aggressive / downbeat than what we considered to be "classic rock", and that's how they became (and remained) cool. For most of their career you could consider them a hard rock / alternative band that was respectful of, and played with, classic rock influences. Now they're the other way round, a classic rock band which occasionally courts the alternative rock crowd. But they're more and more comfortable with just being like U2, or The Who, or any number of classic rock bands that wouldn't be called "alternative" by anyone.

Which is essentially to say we could sniff each other's asses on this all day and end up deciding that they're classic rock/alternative and call it a day.

Well yeah, but why do that on RM?

Because we could/should always be using our time to find good Ed Art.

They are around 50. Who the hell in their right mind would respect and take seriously them if their records were angry/heavy and depressed?

Everyone, if they were good. Have you heard Johnny Cash's American Recordings?

But yeah, more albums like Backspacer will get them more serious respect.
