there was a audiobook narrated by Wil Wheaton and all the nostalgia/geek pandering was more than I could bear.

Take a look at The Professional by W.C. Heinz. Or Heroes of the Frontier by Dave Eggers. (This post is in response to lenny)

Well, I love the Genius book, but it's definitely one of a kind. His novels are typically a bit more chill.
