I know most people will hate it, but I don't mind the Kesler deal that just happened...Bonino had more points in just as many games last year, he's younger, cheaper, and Kesler has been very much injury prone. I don't know if Sbisa will ever be anything, but given the problems that re-signing Tanev might bring, it can't hurt to have a ready body able to step in. And the 24th pick, well, the team stole Shinkaruk with the same pick last year. If they can end up with Dal Colle or Virtanen at 6 and then maybe try to hit a home run with Ho-Sang at 24, it'd be a hell of a job by Benning.

I think we're going to see a lot more moves from the Canucks this offseason too, and I wouldn't be surprised to see more today. They really should be tearing things down.

I want the Leafs to be really active in restructuring their roster in the next couple months, and I'm hoping they start today. They have enough good young pieces that they can use as a core, so I would be happy to see them choose a handful of players to build around and work from there. I'm just afraid they'll make stupid moves, which... they don't have a very good decision-making history.

God I love Jim Benning already...my only concern is he clears all this cap room and signs new players to utterly stupid stupid deals, but since that isn't really how Boston operated, I'm hoping that's just my Gillis hangover talking

They have over $20 million in cap space right now. That's impressive.

I hope a whole bunch of teams go crazy and start wheeling and dealing tonight. The draft is always a lot more fun when you're trying to keep track of who's going where and who has which picks.

Among all the crazy contracts that were handed out yesterday, that one is just amazing. He gets a shot at rebuilding value AND going for another cup and the Hawks get a solid second line center for cheap without committing anything long term. The Ehrhoff deal is another one I really like.

I agree, Kane has been asking for a decent second line center he can skate with for a long time. I think he finally got one, albeit for 1 year.

I agree, Kane has been asking for a decent second line center he can skate with for a long time. I think he finally got one, albeit for 1 year.

The Hawks are easily the best team in the league at managing the cap, and this is just another great example. They've done an amazing job of working around their high-priced talent and knowing when to let role players leave (Byfuglien, Ladd, Versteeg, Brouwer). Having said that, it'll be interesting to see how they work Kane and Toews extensions in after 2014-15.

I would expect them to trade Sharp and use those savings to pay both of them before that happens, but who really knows?

also, i love the hartnell trade. lets start off by saying, hartnell fucking sucks at hockey. he's a terrible skater , has a below average shot, isnt a good passer, and is a defensively liability. umberger is far more versatile, he can play on any of the top 3 lines, play any forward position, and play on both the PP and PK. i have no idea why people in philly were upset with hartnell leaving. i would have traded him for a roll of tape, im glad we got someone decent in return. hopefully vinny is the next one out the door.
