The "He still gives his love..." bit is an extension of the verse, to me, in the same way as that climactic loud verse is at the end of LB. But yeah, PJ really suck at a traditional song structure. Aaaaaaand that happens to be what keeps Sirens from being a typical schlock ballad. The structure is a mess.

The "A wave came crashing..." part is the same melody as the verse, it's just an octave higher. So I don't see it as a chorus.

For all the hate Backspacer gets, I'd also like to say that I love the chorus in Amongst The Waves "I gotta save it noooww, better loud than too late" I sing along every time.


Hell, even Speed Of Sound has a nice chorus "But This night has been a long one, waiting on a sun, that never cooomes"

That part is beautiful.

Looks like I got everyone started on choruses and melodies

Lightning Bolt isn't one of their best choruses but that's not only because of the words he's singing. It's because the rest of the song is much more interesting melodically and there isn't much in the way Ed sings 'Lightning Bolt' which makes it sound that great. It's just an ok part of an otherwise great song.

I find some of their other simple choruses to be excellent, mostly because of how Ed delivers them. In Hiding is a really simple one but that high note on the Hi-ding part makes it special for me. Release Me is another great but simple one. Some other great ones have already been mentioned.

Off to bed. It's 1:25 am here.

Yes, same here re Amongst the Waves chorus....never really understood why so many seemed to dislike that song but whatever

Yeah, I guess that's the problem with Backspacer for me. It's full of parts that I love, mixed with parts I don't, all within the same song. It's a frustrating album.

Guys, we've gone, like, several pages saying almost only good things about Pearl Jam and their music. This thread suddenly feels like it's all written in Latin.

Some would think so, but others would think that it was ruined by Ed's hoarse voice in the chorus. He would've screamed that chorus S/T style if he'd written it now.
