But thank every god imaginable for Charlize Theron.
Im a huge fan of YA. Charlize is incredible and her character is so fucking interesting. The scene with her and the sister...damn, that was something else.

It's an interesting idea for a character, yes. I agree. And thank god Charlize plays her. But I wanted so much more.

Oh man. There are lots of deep dive musings on it out there, and I believe some posit that Goodman was the devil. At its heart, it’s about the nature of high art vs art-for-commerce.
Or is it about the cost of creativity
And about how his ego ruins what he wants to achieve.
Or maybe a retelling of a classic biblical parable
It seems like it could be all of these things.

I'd be curious to hear people's thoughts/interpretations of a few things:

-What's the deal with the mosquitoes? (it couldn't have been mosquitoes, they don't have them in L.A.)
-What was in the box? Was it a "Pulp Fiction briefcase" kind of thing? Or a "Se7en" kind of thing?
-What's with the peeling, wet wallpaper?
-What is the significance of the woman in the picture/the actual woman on the beach?

Or maybe more importantly, are the Coen Brothers just fucking with us? Are they just making fun of pretentious art films? By trying to overanalyze all these details, am I just falling for the joke? Which brings everything back to "high-art vs. art-for-commerce"

that one definitely took another viewing and some online articles
There are few movies that I've craved outside thoughts/opinions about less than Barton Fink. It is perfect. And other people's interpretations could only lessen what I got from it. I don't even want to hear the Coens talk about it.
i get that...i just felt like i missed some symbolism and just wasn’t sure how i should take certain things

it’s been years but i think what i read was mostly theoretical, but i did open me up to various symbols or concepts i missed

If you’re up for it, I wrote a long and rambling critique of how much I hate the Cody/Reitman movies on here on Rm somewhere. Though YA is one of the few that I do like.
Yeah I'm with VG here, I liked Young Adult a lot. I also liked Jennifer's Body, though it's a totally different film. But Cody has been involved in some truly awful projects. Juno is near-unwatchable for me now without intense feelings of cringe, and Tully is maybe one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I honestly don't even remember a second of Up in the Air, so, not really a ringing endorsement of Reitman here either (who apparently did Tully as well).

Jennifer's Body is soooo good. Its a classic.

Tully was ok, it was just very obvious. But im guessing it captures the possible depression after motherhood very properly. Women were very touched and loved it.

why? I think being tired and doing all kinds of stuff while having a baby is pretty common. To have post delivery depression is also very common.

Yes but hallucinating a caretaker while putting up with your shitty husband and his even shittier brother feels like Reitman has really low expectations for women
Weird take. Even weirder that you fault Reitman for it and not Cody.

Given your take on Tully, what do you like about YA?

Swallow.

The movie looks gorgeous, and the framing is great. The lead actress was very good...but it it all paid off with one scene. Jesus christ, what a powerful scene.

Call Me By Your Name.

Beautifully shot. Chalamet was incredible. Pacing was a little slow and precious sometimes but I really enjoyed this.
