A common example that's pointed to is Week 17 of the 2007 season. The Giants were locked into their seed and had some banged up guys, most notably, Plaxico. They (barely) lost to the Patriots that week, but it gave them a lot of confidence that they could beat the Pats when they met again in the Super Bowl.

Admittedly, that is a lone example and hardly a study.
