I thought people were questioning whether Will Smith could have any sort of "genuine" reaction to anything; maybe the exception to that is laughing at a comedian they enjoy

Will Smith laughing is irrelevant. Sometimes it takes a moment for the gravity of something to sink in, and sometimes people laugh when they're uncomfortable. I'm not really factoring that in my opinion of what went down

I agree. What he did was wrong, but the laughing thing was just like instinct. He probably hadn't properly thought about what was said, or of course seen his wife's reaction as well.

as is "Chris Rock told a joke for reason's I'm imagining and have some sympathy for", frankly

no wonder this conversion got heated and people got upset if it was about our individual (or collective) and subjective senses of morality all along

You're not wrong, but it's a little self-righteous to laugh and then be the big enforcer. Laugh, be embarrassed and apologize to your wife later.
