Let me explain the merchandising criticism in a different way.

Pearl Jam is aware 500-2500 people are so mentally obsessed with the band (in an unhealthy way) they will buy anything they put out, especially if limited edition, and regardless of whether they can afford it.

Pearl Jam has milked the living shit out of these poor people for years now. That's our problem. And it's a MINOR problem compared to all the other problems.

Were you were that fan in the mid 90's though? (honest question). Is there any part of you that has such a disgust for it now just because you think the music sucks?

Yes; but I was 15-20 years old; I wasn't poor; and I am NOT making fun of that fan today. I'm upset at the band preying on them.

Not to contradict what goes on in other threads around here, but I for one love the current trend of releasing limited edition vinyl to 10C only. They have recognized that there are enough of us who are into this type of collectable and their doing it the right way in offering it to fan club nerds only.

I don't see what there is to refute here. Nobody's saying his enjoyment of these things is invalid. Maybe someone's claimed the audience is being exploited, I haven't.

Some fans clearly enjoy this stuff, others don't; there's not any resolution to uncover.

If you are simply saying that the problem with all the merchandise pearl jam is releasing is just that it isn't good, rather than the fact that it exists, then I retract that post if I directed it at you. I think Simmons is wrong to reduce the music to the merchandise, but the merchandise is a reflection of the commitment you have to the music.

"Merchandise is a reflection of the commitment you have to the music" is both a very vaseline-lensed version of the relationship between these massive marketing ventures and the band's occasional music-making, and indicative of a level of pessimism about love and life that not even I stoop to.

It's one of my many, many, points. I do think the band exploits it's fans. Releasing 800 limited edition XYZ items is just one of the ways they do it. It happens to be my most minor issue w/ the band. 10 Club's complete lack of respect for it's customers is a far bigger issue. Pearl Jam and Ed being completely corporate w/ Target, Oracle, Salesforce.com, birthday parties, etc. And most importantly, the lousy music they have put out for a decade.
