and every fucking album is getting rave reviews, why do people always have to bring that up like they needed to convince themselves they're in the right

honestly? Sea of Love live was better and more exciting live than Abel last week at Mercury Lounge... and i'd put probably 3-4 songs on this in my top 15-20 National songs, so i'd say that's pretty solid after 6 albums.
Slipped might be in my top 10 National songs ever too actually. Some of Matt's best lyrics to date. And Salt has become a top 3-5 for me after last weeks shows.
few bands in recent history have put out 4 (imo) classic albums in a row. i can't think of one personally... even Wilco had a bit of a dropoff after their 3rd straight classic album (YHF) with AGIB. i like good music, i don't care if bands make drastic changes or not. Change for the sake of isn't a good thing, I don't want them to "change who they are". Plus this album has more in common with Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers than it does HV.
also, as someone who has been seeing them live for coming up on 10 years in September, they're better live than they've ever been at the moment (not surprisingly). can't wait for DC/Philly/Richmond next weekend.
Dismiss it as fanboy homerism, I don't really care, but this is by far one I'd my favorite albums this year (only one that comes close so far is Phosphorescent). And has only gotten more enjoyable as weeks go on.
Well you're off about High Violet and Wilco's A Ghost Is Born...in my professional estimation.
there just doesn't seem to be much overlap between our tastesolace wrote:hah. why's that?

i don't think Tennessee Fire is that great sadly... got into them with At Dawn, and love It Still Moves and Z, but yeah, they had a great run (sadly their last two have been just dreck... way worse than any National album (even their debut) for me)given2trade wrote: Agree X 2. Also MMJ's 1st 4 albums are gold, first 3 for sure.
Yeah 4 classic is hard. For me Arcade Fire is on the Clock. I really enjoyed the first three and i'm excited to see how the fourth coems insolace wrote: few bands in recent history have put out 4 (imo) classic albums in a row
you heard that new crazy ending they do on that song live yet?Chris_H_2 wrote:Big fan of Humiliation . . .
Wow, that ending is . . . surprising. It reminds me of the random horns in Fleet Fox's The Argument.solace wrote:you heard that new crazy ending they do on that song live yet?Chris_H_2 wrote:Big fan of Humiliation . . .

their 3 album run, 4 for those of you who like TWFM, is hard to top. their run is what i was thinking about when i made my post on page 1 before the album came out. i didnt expect them to change or sound different, i like the sound and niche that they've created for themselves. but i was hoping for an album that had the same quality songwriting, lyrics, vocals, and feel as their previous 3. im not really disappointed with what i've heard, but i just dont feel it like the last three. who knows, i'm hoping thursdays show will change my opinion for the better. i think it will.solace wrote:...few bands in recent history have put out 4 (imo) classic albums in a row. i can't think of one personally... i like good music, i don't care if bands make drastic changes or not. i've heard this twice now, but i don't hear it... someone said it was just because of the "you're" part in the chorus? which seems like a gigantic stretch to me.Chris_H_2 wrote:I know I was down on this album before, but I really like it.
By the way, Fireproof is a total ripoff of Racing Like a Pro. And the end of Don't Swalllow the Cap is straight from the end of Brainy.
