I don't think it sounds like Talking Heads because I never listened to them. It's just a good song in my mind.

a band like pearl jam somehow sounding like talking heads and pulling it off is a fucking miracle.

Influence and ripping off are two different things. THis isn't a rip off. They are a rock band and every rock band wears its influences on its sleeves.

Give me 11 more songs with the same direction/energy/vibe. I’m totally in.

I love it! Great energy. This is the best music they've released in a LONG time.

Really love Ed's angst and the energy feels like a new Rearview Mirror of sorts. Def talking heads vibe, but so what!?

Certainly better than their recent efforts to sound like a rock band.

It's just if you really want to talk about the band being groundbreaking, it should be songs that are creative for the music landscape, not just Pearl Jam imitating a different band

also in a few weeks it will become a pearl jam song and won't wear the influence as heavily. figuring out the influences is a very "first listen" kind of thing.

given how they described the making of this song I'm not sure this is indicative of the musical direction of the album. But hopefully the spirit that produced it is.

It's really hard to imagine some stale ass rocker next to this song. I'm sure there will be more guitar driven songs surrounding this but I highly doubt they'll sound like Ole/Fixer

Pretty sure we'll learn he's not singing "grow their dicks."

From the bridge through the end, this is pretty great. I like the verses, and I can feel them quickly growing on me. I think the chorus is the weak link.

I'm not ready to say that it is a Talking Heads rip-off, but I'm also not ready to say that it isn't. But it kind of clearly is. The bass riff is fun, I can't stop picturing Tina Weymouth dancing when it kicks in

Confusion is to commotion what love is to our devotion
Acceptably big, big as the ocean
And equally hard to control

So save your predictions
And burn your assumptions
Love is friction
Ripe for comfort

Endless equations
A ton of persuasion
Doors open up
To interpretation

Expecting perfection
Leaves a lot to ignore
When the past is the present
And the future's no more
When every tomorrow is the same as before

The looser things get
The tighter you become
The looser things get
The tighter...

Not one man
Can be greater than the sum
It's not a negative thought
Or a positive (positive, positive)

Falling down
Not staying down
Could've hold me up
Rather tear me down
Drown in a river

Expecting perfection
Leaves a lot to ignore
When the past is the present
And the future's no more
When every tomorrow is the same as before

Numbers keep falling off the calendar floor
We're all stuck in our boxes
When it's open(?) no more

Collecting up the forget-me-nots
Now we're crawling with the floor(?)
I'm in love with clairvoyants 'coz they're out(?) of this world

I know the girls wanna dance away their circumstance
I know the boys wanna grow their dicks and fix and fire things
I know the girls wanna dance
Clairvoyants in a trance
I know the boys wanna grow their dicks and fix and fire things

Stand back when the spirit comes
Drown in a river
I still think these are a work in progress.

Jeff Ament:

"I can’t tell you how proud I am about this group of songs. As you know, we took our time and that benefited us taking more chances. “Dance” was a perfect storm of experimentation and real collaboration, mixing up the instrumentation and building a great song, and Ed writing some of my favorite words yet, around Matt’s killer drum pattern. Did I mention Mike’s insane guitar part and that Stone is playing bass on this one? We’ve opened some new doors creatively and that’s exciting."
