let’s hope ... because they never play that song live

I don't know, this recording feels really overdone and polished to me, not the kind of "one and done" vibe you get from songs like...I don't know, I'm actually not sure I get that vibe from any Pearl Jam songs. Maybe some of the stuff on Riot Act.

The song just feels so incoherent. Not like, "Wow, this is unrestrained freedom letting itself loose on record," but like, "This person has no instinct for how to form a cohesive melody or song structure." I feel like it starts off promising with this almost 50's-surf-rock sounding chord progression, like maybe this is going to be an enjoyable minor track, but it quickly descends into this disorganized clutter of musical nonsense.
Agreed; as a relatively uneducated listener in terms of the minutiae of production, I feel like I'm able to hear the ProTools edits in this song right off the bat.

I'm assuming the single version is clean and the album version is not, which normally would make me happy but if Ed goes Dirty Uncle on this I'll keep this one

Johnny Guitar has an INTERESTING vocal melody though. What the fuck is going on in this song.

this needs to be viewed in terms of a god's dice and not a hail hail. an album track that eventually sinks its hooks into you over the course of the album. glad it's part of the gang.

this shit is more unhinged than you guys are giving it credit for. the buildup to mike's insane solo into the bridge into the outro is balls to the wall to notch.

that alone makes it rise way above the "punky" stuff of the last two albums.

“I’m super proud of this collection of songs.” - Jeff Ament.

Clearly, they didn’t let JA know they included this track on the record.

To its credit, I'd agree with this; the oddities of this song's construction would never have showed up (with one or two exceptions) on their last few records.

Agreed on all of this, you’ve put it very well.

I really don’t get what they’re going for here and I’m not sure they do either.

First impressions:

This song is pasted together all the place. It sounds like a bad Backspacer song. I was "okay" with it until the hair metal solo, which ruined it for me.I like the "YEEEEEAAAAA" part and the melody. The snippet we got has no natural lead it and feels like a whole other song. Ice and wind sound at the end makes no sense.

I shall give it more chances tomorrow...but not looking good on first listen.

I don’t want to hear PJ do something they’ve done before. We’ve had that forever. This sounds different. It’s kinda dirty. I love some of the guitar tones in the riff. I’m really uncertain how I will feel about this song in another month or two. Hell, I’m interested to know what it will sound like on second listen. Here goes...
After my second listen....

Guys, this song is fucking awesome. I’m totally into it.

Have fun hating
Third time’s the charm. This song is groovy. I’m stoked for Gigaton, it feels like it could go anywhere. That’s an incredibly fun and renewed spirit I haven’t felt about PJ in about 15 years. This is fun again. :hooray:
Fourth time confirmed. This is one that a lot of you guys will come around on I think.

I respect that; it definitely is cluttered, but that clutter doesn't feel meticulously "layered" like sickly cake to me
