Where you been, can I find
A glimpse of my friend
Don’t know where or when one of us left
The other behind
Divisions came and troubles multiplied
Incisions made by scalpel blades of time

If this is about Chris , was there drama between Vedder and Cornell? I had never heard about it though I know there was some family stuff - though this verse seems to be about two friends who grew apart.

Not sure on the drama, we may never know. Chris’ daughter Lily seems to be really close with Eddie’s family.

There does seem to be have been some sort of split between the families. Chris’ wife has written some stuff about it. But to what degree Ed and Chris were affected, I don’t know.

Today i had the freakiest moment of things aligning...

I was chilling after dinner and listened through the album on my headphones.. When i got to Comes Then Goes i casually opened Instagram and start scrolling down... Exactly when Ed starts the "Can i try..." my random scrolling aligns with Pearl Jams posting in 100% perfect sync.. Freaked me out...

Are we sure on lyrics ?

I want to believe the line is “I wish it was not you that she had bled”

except the other line doesn't work as well if it's bled instead of led. I prefer the led, actually

Nothing public about Ed and Chris but for sure there was stuff out there about Ed and Chris' 2nd wife. Didn't her mom go on a mini twitter rampage at one point?

It doesn't take much a of a deep dive to discover that Cornell's 2nd wife is...complicated.

I don't know that there was a huge falling out: "Don't know where or when one of us left". I can really relate with that line. I've had 3 or 4 really close friends that over time you just aren't close to anymore. Nobody is to blame necessarily, you've both grown and morphed into a different person and those two persons aren't compatible like they once were. It's a really poignant thought. Tragedy doesn't always have some big instigator behind it. Sometimes it's just time. That's what I take from the song anyway.

Probably Ed got an issue with Viki. He was pointed out by her mom, he wasnt in the memorial and in the concert. Timmy C wasnt there too and there were also rumors about him not standing her.

It seems more personal though than just that...

I guess I agree with what was quoted above that it's likely not a huge falling out. The line quoted above I think goes with the next one, "don't know where or when one of us left the other behind".

I agree that it's not a sudden schism but exactly what you said, it's talking about the slow growing apart over time ("incisions made by scalpel blades of time") as in little by little their relationship grew more and more distant and they became different people as the years went by. And I agree it's a very poignant and sad thought, thinking about how little by little these things happen. Though it does also mention divisions and troubles multiplying which makes me wonder if there were extra stressors on top of it.

But whether it was drama or time bringing them apart I just never knew that Eddie and Chris weren't close anymore, which it seems to imply.

Also I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that I think that stanza especially is one of Eddie Vedder's greatest lyrics ever.

Also the more I listen the more this song is my favorite on the album. I've always been a fan of these types of Vedder songs, especially as he ages. There's always a sense when he tries to play the rock songs that he's recapturing something that he simply doesn't have anymore - it sounds inauthentic. Not to mention the vocal issues. But songs like this only gain more weight with his age IMO, and he still sounds great on them. And the more I read the lyrics the more I'm happy that it's just Vedder playing. I'm SO happy that he put a song like this on.
