I love how the outro chanting forgoes the triumphal direction it could have gone in. Instead it’s much more somber, befitting the times. It feels like a small group of people huddled around a dying fire, willing it back into existence. And then, in the end, it starts to reignite

for those struggling with this, a simple 11-step guide:

1. Listen to Peter Gabriel's "Biko."
2. Go for a 45-minute run/walk, alternating every 5 minutes.
3. Watch the sun set.
4. Sit by a large tree, contemplating life and saying Hello to passersby.
5. Go home, turn off all the lights.
6. Press Play on Pearl Jam's "River Cross."
7. Actually step 6 should probably be done with the lights on.
8. Turn the lights off again.
9. Turn the volume all the way up.
10. Close your eyes.
11. Post "this song rulez hard" on RM message board.

River Cross: So powerful no 12th step is required.

1. Completes effortlessly. Great song!
2. Sounds awful. Mission aborted.

Open to alternate options. However, simply listening in the context of the album has not worked for me thus far. I have also tried turning my thoughts to loved ones who have died. This too has proven unsuccessful.

well, i did the best i could. 11 steps is as far as i go.

for me, this song just clicked from the time i saw the youtube concert video. and somehow, i also liked the studio version immediately. i said after first listen it reminded me of peter gabriel in a good way and that pocket still satisfies me.

I only watched the Ed solo performance maybe twice, and that was many months ago. I only had the vaguest recollection of what that even sounded like when I heard the album version, which I immediately loved. I think the percussion sounds fantastic and adds so much texture to this song. And I love how weathered Ed’s voice sounds - it reminds me of Cold Confession in that way, another song I absolutely adore.

It feels self-indulgent and boring - Vedder trying to channel Paul Simon or a dull Springsteen album closer. I will reward it's originality in comparison to the rest of the back catalogue - it's not the retread that we see from Never Destination or Who Ever Said, at least.
