Several listens in... I think this is a fantastic record. I do think Glen is the MVP but I love what everyone brings to the table. Great songs. Great collaboration. And I wasn't at all excited for the movie but this music makes me way more interested.

The first verse of Flag Day is the worst part of the soundtrack but it recovers well enough.

- "rather been home" would have been a nice guitar instrumental without Ed moaning and heehee'ing over the top. get over yourself.
On subsequent listens, this is intolerable.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Yeah not a fan of the middle part of this album - Rather Be Home thru As You Did Before. The rest has grown on me quite a bit.

Heard the Drive cover; it’s…fine. It might be a treat to see Ed perform in person but the studio cut is…fine.
I never got into REM as much as some of my other friends but there are certain songs the Stipe’s vocals just melts me. Ed has had that quality too.

Ed makes some interesting phrasing choices in his latter day work.

Flag Day is a perfect example. I think its a fantastic song and he sounds great. I love the music, the melody, and the lyrics. Its just...that clumsy thing. LIke maybe he could figure out a way to simplify some phrases without sacrificing what he's trying to say.

Or, maybe he's perfectly happy and delivering exactly what he wants.

Regardless

"The birthday boy's finally dressed up and he's looking like the king" Is great but.....

I love the song though

One life was never enough.

That's great.

I’ve heard most of the tracks by now. Ed’s are fine and could well grow on me but the Cat Power songs are the standouts early on.

i just heard 'drive'. this is probably my favorite rem song, i can't believe my favorite singer covered it. it's not anything amazing like some of their other covers, but its eddie vedder singing 'drive' so it can pretty much only be awesome

So I both did not realize this had come out and did not realize Eddie was as involved in it as he was (I thought it was a song with his daughter). I've only had a chance for one listen so far. Early thoughts:

Some nice songs, but no immediate stand outs (the music on the back half of Flag Day I quite liked)
Although I am in the exact center of the Venn diagram this is intended for, I did immediately bust into a huge grin when Eddie started covering Drive
I think the record feels a little loud and close for how atmospheric some of these songs probably are intended to be, but I haven't been able to listen with good headphones yet.
Eddie has to stop trying to hit those HEEE notes, which he cannot do anymore - and he sounds so good with the same notes just a little lower in his register
I think Olivia might actually be the standout on the record. Color me surprised.

There are a number of ear worm songs on this. I've only listened to it 3 times or so and finding myself humming several tunes.

Pitchfork review is in - 1.6 out of 10

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/35 ... n-hansard/
And it's so frustrating because Vedder would be better suited to virtually anything else. The man would sound more at home dueting with Shania. Listen to that! I'm in awe of his lungs. He belts these songs like they never went out of style, like he's still got that curly Ted-era mane thrown back and glistening, like he wants to shake the studio to its very foundation with the power of all his gristled fury-- when all of a sudden, the effects kick in and morph his voice into a fucking sitar! It just might be the most ridiculous and ill-timed production trick of his career. And all I can picture is Vedder high-fiving Glen Hansard and hitting the beach to play volleyball with Creed.

Duck, because America's gonna vomit.

I cannot get into this album yet, but the Cat Power songs are of course great. Wonder how she's doing lately?

I find myself wishing we had a true Ed solo album. No soundtrack, collab, or uke gimmicks. In an ideal world, this imaginary album would have been a No Code-era release. Nowadays, I just can't seem to get on the same wavelength as Ed with his music. I do enjoy the title track, though.
