Ah yeah, thought you might've done.
I meant "languid" and not "squalid". So.
You're one of the writers I know that make me realise that I have an inadequate vocabulary really. I'm always reaching for the same adjectives.

So does this thing sound like Falling Down or Force of Nature? Translation: is it really neat or does it suck ass?

I wouldn't say it sounds like either. The best description I could give would be Pearl Jam doing Led Zeppelin.

It's a logical extension of Binaural except grittier.

I don't think this sounds anything like "force of nature".
It's got the driving rhythm of a Zep song as has been mentioned, but it's hard to find a PJ song analog to this. It's also hard to discern much with the sound quality and almost no vocals.
BUT, it's definitely worth your time to seek this out for the following reasons (imho).
- driving bass/rhythm
- drums are AWESOME
- Mike's little leads leaving the verses are awesome
It's literally not like any PJ songs that I can name. It's exactly what I want from 2013 PJ as it sounds different. Backspacer pissed me off because as they said they threw away the homework songs. I want the homework songs, i want the complexity. Without that effort, so much of it seems like throw away in retrospect. Backspacer was the first album where at the end of my first listen my initial reaction was "this sucks". In retrospect "got some", "force of nature" and "amongst the waves" are the only songs I really like.
I really, really hope Lightning Bolt gives me back some of what I've lost in the past 5 years of Target commercials, struggling Ed voice, expensive tickets, shitty ticket policies, whoreish merch and spotty touring.
But I still love them for the 22 years of listening and 18 years of shows I've seen, so I still care.
And I hope Friday fucking rocks like a magic kiss, because I need it to.

I really like what I'm hearing here. Sounds like a pretty dark/atmospheric song - can't wait until tomorrow night. Hopefully we at least get a few youtube videos of the performance.

I would be a bit surprised if they play it in all honesty.

I don't see why this would be a 'homework song', even if it's good. I think they've stopped working their fingers to the bone on song craft. The most we can hope for is that we dig it.

Actually, compared to the rockers on "Backspacer", "Mind your Manners" is a homework song. There is a lot going on there with layers, leads, vocals.
I guess I just mean, this sounds like something different. I haven't felt that in a while.

I think its hard to tell anything about how much effort they have put into the songwriting for this album based on MYM. They can probably write a MYM in their sleep at this point...

I take your point, and it's all relative. This is sounding better than Backspacer, as is MYM. But I'm just saying that instrumentation and interesting production wasn't the problem with Backspacer (even if the production wasn't to your taste, it was layered and interesting to an extent). I interpreted 'homework song' as being a song they worked harder at in terms of structure and lyrics. They may have done that here, and they've kind of done it with MYM, but I think it's more that I like the style of MYM. It's still a free and easy punk-rap-rave-metal-Motorhead-rockafella-skank song, just one that works.

Reminds me a lot of the 'Open Road' "improv" they soundchecked on tour in '95, which was a pretty fully-fleshed out tune (a la Falling Down/Words, etc.). Hint of 2000 Mile Blues here too.....

I'm not saying it's the world best song, it just feels better than "the fixer", "supersonic" and "ole" which felt lazy.

I *like* MYM more than any song on Backspacer, bar one or two, maybe three. But that doesn't prove that it's any more complexly written. It's a pop song like they were, just one with more menace.
