He scared himself, into a trance
ducking down rivers, secretly
He floated out, into the ocean
of his worst dream, of his rough sea

he was not one of them, always hurting himself
the scars in the seam, the wounds are torn (??) THE WOUNDS UNTOLD?
whatever time had healed, it's still too cold
A life washed away, like words in the sand
and when the high tide came, so went his brain/ PLAN
a troubled past, a troubled future
a troubled way leaning on a bar stool/A TROUBLED WEIGHT
one strobelight star, he finally saw
navigation towards a brand new course
but to himself the memory clear
cold confession only, that only he could hear

He let himself scream, he let himself cry
let himself reach the other side
there was no christ, there was no cross
just forgiveness, allowed himself
accepted the past, then set it free
oh and it ran off like an animal with ease/RELEASED
he holds the bruise, he holds their star (??)/HE HOLDS THE PROOF?
in his pure arms, in his clear heart
He's safe now, he's back in her breast
he saw his path, and changed it, chased it, at last//CHASED IT X2
Other lines in here i am not sure of but had nothing better to offer

I hear "took him down river, secretly" but I'm not sure that makes sense.

Or ducking down river with no s

All these make sense to me. Took him down river seems fine. Also, I'm hearing this line differently:

whatever time had healed, it still took hold

The only line of the ones which were changed which I'm sticking to is the last one. It still sounds like 'changed it, chased it at last' to me.

Props. I'm failing miserably on these.

That seems right.

And Scars unseen, wounds untold. That seems to go together.

I've been out of the loop since yesterday afternoon... what's the latest? Is everyone still creaming over CC or has reality set it yet?

CC to me is the best PJ ballad since Nothingman and Immortality. I've always felt that even the best post-Vitalogy ballads have been either good or very good but not great. Not essential. This is essential Pearl Jam.

I don't think I'd call it the best ballad since Vitalogy, but it is pretty damn good. I guess it would also depend on what we're defining as a ballad.

stip wrote: Instead we get a much darker resolution. He is united with what he lost (either in reality or fantasy, but it doesn’t matter), and finds no comfort there. Whatever came between them is still there. There’s a wall now, and there is no way it won’t keep them apart. And the song winds down on that realization—the illusion of the happy ending that isn’t fooling anyone.
I just read the intro post and found this interesting. Before i read this i thought the song was about someone falling into depression ( or alchoholism but maybe im focusing too much on the barstool lyric) but then having a moment of clarity and letting go of everything that was holding him back and finding his way back to safety and his love.

Where did you get that he's still finding no comfort, or that its an unhappy ending? I'm curious because the way i was hearing it, i did think the ending music was still dark for a seemingly happy resolution.

I also didn't pick up on anything indicating that it was about dealing with loss, but if you go with that interpretation, the entire end verse could be depicting the characters suicide, he meets 'her' on the otherside. Kind of like billie hollidays 'Gloomy Sunday', where i've always assumed the verse were she wakes up and realises she'd dreamed everything, was actually her waking up after her death.

Making depressing songs more depressing :hooray:

Boring. This is definitely a demo. The arrangement is barely there the vocal take is essentially absent. It's a work in progress place holder instead of a proper vocal take.
I guess they never finished/ didn't know what to do with it. It sounds kind of like the gibberish singers do barely hinting at the melody and words when they aren't finished with the lyrics. I find it extremely repetitive.

I didn't have time to check it before but I've seen the comments here and honestly the demos didn't surprise me. I like this board because most of regular posters are well articulated in being critical about the band except when some shitty demo pops up then they turn into geniuses. There are things about this song that could be the basis of a passable song. The melody and vocal take need a lot of work and i'm not talking about he hurr-durr with severe sinusitis here. It needs to get interesting sooner than the outro. It needs an arrangement and possibly structural changes.
In my opinion not releasing those 2 songs wasn't a mistake and i wouldn't be surprised if the ever release them it's not going to be the versions we heard. If that happens hundreds of posts here about how they ruined them will follow.
