50-ish albums is always going to be a tough thing to tackle, but Ah Um makes the most sense here.
Ah, that's a typical jazz discography -- doesn't scare me in the slightest! Mingus will be my deep dive for 2022. You heard it here first.
This starts NOW:

I wouldn't say I have anywhere near an encyclopaedic familiarity with Mingus's catalogue, but Blues & Roots is still probably my favourite.

Great, great record.

It's a monster of an album! I feel like I can feel Mingus's bass punching me in the face during "My Jelly Roll Soul."

The journey continues today with Mingus Ah Um. I've been familiar with "Better Git It In Your Soul" and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" for a long time (and the vocal version of "Fables of Faubus"), but today I'm digging all the way in! Sounds great so far

Sleater-Kinney probably fits this category. I own and love the vinyl with the song about the coyote on the light rail, but beyond that I haven't really explored. I listened to The Woods today for the first time and was really digging it. Their sound is my kind of thing. I also felt good when I finally recognized where that "my whole life..." tag comes from on some of those Not For Yous.

"Light Rail Coyote" is my favorite SK song -- the dueling vocals during the chorus are just completely beguiling to me. Beautiful lyrics too.

SK are actually kind of the opposite of this exercise for me, though -- I started getting their albums and really enjoyed them, but the deeper I went, the more I felt like I'd heard all I needed to hear. All Hands On the Bad One, One Beat, and The Woods are enough for me.

All Hands is such a great, great album.

But of course I'm the only one in the world still listening to them who thinks their new stuff is super fantastic and compelling.

Reid, you could give No Cities To Love a spin at some point, but you shouldn't probably go any further forward in their catalog than that. The Woods seems like your style and that sound isn't ever really repeated. But everything after it changes in unexpected ways and it's not for everyone. I could see you really not connecting with the last two especially. Very different sound.

I 100% considered never replying to this post after our "nobody wants to talk about the things I like" exchange in the TV thread.

Sometime last year I thought, "I bet I'd really like MF Doom," and I was right!

I'd never paid any attention to him before and then he goes and dies and I start hearing him all over the place thinking to myself "this is 'aight".

A tale as old as time.

This time last year I dove head first into the Frames and ended up not listening to anything else the rest of the year. Fucking love it. Find me a better song than Rise. You can't.
