Anyone notice Ed stepping on something like a pedal, as if to turn it off/on, during the second chorus?

I need to get my hands/feet on one of those.

I don't know where all this auto-tune talk is coming from
I don't hear any of that...anywhere... on this album

no evidence of it live either

I think he's just stepping on the base of the mic stand in the video..
I don't think he's ever used pedals
His guitar sound is just a tweed amp cranked

As for the teleprompter...long overdue
Ed's been fucking up lyrics to pearl jam songs for far too long

Definitely no live auto-tune lol- on setting sun live you could hear Ed trying to find the right pitch from a little flat at the beginning. He corrected quickly and effectively, but it’s there if you listen for it.

These guys need to watch their steps. There’s a video of Mike falling off the stage during the Porch solo.

Mike has two of the best upper hands in the business but needs to be careful of his lower feet

Maybe drummers have two upper hands, but unless Mike is ambidextrous wouldn't his upper hand be his left?

This one is sounding so good live - I love how they're doing the intro and Mike and Stones guitar parts on this are amazing
Love how the rhythm and lead parts weave in and out of each other and at times both are playing completely different but complimentary lines
They were so good at doing that on the early albums (Ten & Vs) love hearing Stone and Mike playing like this again

This is a cool point, you can definitely tell this album was made together more than the others, and I love it for that

I don't know what they did but I find it very suspicious how good Eddie sounds on the album vs what he sounds like live (Except for on Scared of Fear for some reason when he did it on Stern and sounded incredible?? But most of the time you can hear a degradation in the live performances whereas he sounds awesome on most of the album)

they can do multiple takes to record an album, they can't live

seems to me that if you watch enough of the videos for this tour, it's evident that he can reach all the necessary notes fine; a little autotune to perfect a studio performance is normal, there's definitely not an outrageous amount imo

Holy shit...people sound better when they have numerous takes to perfect the performance?

Absolute madness :haha:

Of course that's true, but his range live does not seem to match his range on the album, like I can't believe he ever got some of those high notes so strongly considering how he sounds when he attempts them live.

he's managing exactly the same high notes (and even higher) on other songs

In a studio setting, you have pristine audio being fed to you at comfortable volumes through the highest quality equipment available. You might be recording a single song that day, or a single stanza. Maybe you're just punching in a single syllable….that might be all you’re doing vocally, that day.

You don’t have to worry about whether your voice will still be up to the task of shouting and straining an hour and a half from now. You can also hear your own performance pretty clearly, right as it happens. If one take of the song leaves you a little sore, you can take a break and have some tea, or whatever.

Autotune is a tool. Just like a distortion pedal is a tool. Just like all electronic manipulations are a tool. I would assume by default that a 60-year-old rock singer aiming for some of these howls and soaring performance points would absolutely use autotune in the studio.

Frankly, I would prefer that they use a little of it live, too. I’d rather they let the tool make up that last 6% of the distance to a note, and thus preserve his voice. Seems smart.
