Yes it's too easy to manipulate, and would require more state bureaucracy to enforce. Unfortunately, democracy means idiots can vote (and it's probably why all democracies fail eventually).

If you change the nature of the question to say can an illiterate person use assistance or assistive technology, then yes. It’s no different a translator for someone whose primary language is not English. But please remember that not all voting is picking names from a list with an (R) or (D) next to them.

Every voter in my family growing up did it this way. My dad, my mom, my grandfather, and my uncles all let me come vote with them when I was a kid. They all would pick their party and pull the lever to vote straight Dem or Republican

*edit - everyone listed above had at least a high school education and paid their taxes properly and on time

Voting straight ticket almost always makes the most sense. An individual can't do much in big government and their personalities don't matter. Just look at the current president, or lack thereof. It doesn't matter if he's actually there.

I'm not arguing against it. I'm saying how is it ok for that to happen but in bi_vance's fantasy if you can't read "R" or "D" you shouldn't have someone help you and therefore not be able to vote.

So, if I know what Trump's name looks like and can vote for him, but I can't read the rest of the ballot. Am I allowed to vote and just vote for him, or does that fact that I can't read the rest of the ballot void my right to vote?

As much as I love to joke that people should pass a test to vote or have kids or walk in populated areas, ... everyone's opinion counts. People who are illiterate are humans with valid opinions about how society works. People who dropped out of high school are humans with valid opinions about how society works. The unemployed are humans with valid opinions about how society works. The child-free are humans with valid opinions about how society works.
