epilogue wrote: Thu July 09, 2026 10:51 pm "Color blind" casting (what a terrible term, but alas) works when it isn't a story about race. So like casting George Clooney to play Martin Luthor King, Jr is abhorrent and uncomfortable and hilarious and stupid. Casting Idris Elba to play David Duke, ditto. The list goes on.

A myth that never happened about people that never existed? Go wild, fem! Hell, you might even be able to make a larger point that connects to modern culture and still resonates. What an idea! Who among us wouldn't love to see Idris Elba play King Arthur?!

History is history. Myth is myth. Movies are movies. How is this even a real conversation?
Agreed
I think it's more of a spectrum. The more you get away from realism, the more suspension of disbelief is required, the more the creator has to alter things like the tone...

If you're going for some gritty, realistic "historical" version of a myth, but the audience is taken out of the story and starts questioning the realism, you're gonna have a bad time.
I have never thought about historical accuracy in my life but I am heterosexual. I am more concerned with an interesting/challenging story. If I am absorbed by the story I am not like looking for these sorts of low level details. More than anything else I just want to see something new. If it feels done before, derivative or the story feel like it's coming from an inauthentic place I'm out.
You do you, but I don't think it's crazy for people to be unable to be absorbed by the story because the filmmaker couldn't bother with the details necessary to tell the type of story he was trying to tell. Points for creativity, but if your craft sucks it's going to hurt the movie.

I feel like it’s more important to ask why Jesus, a middle eastern man is portrayed as a white

With Nolan's super genius creativity, I'm surprised he didn't give the cyclops two eyes. People would be falling over themselves to pat him on the back.

I’m all for historical accuracy. I appreciate how there are people like Robert Eggers who painstakingly ensure every single little goddamn thing is exactly how it goddamn would have been (plus vampires or whatever). I’m glad movies like that are getting made, because I enjoy that aspect of them. But obviously that shouldn’t be the case for every movie.

I don’t know much about Homer’s Odyssey beyond the basic gist of it, but it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch of the imagination for me that, in this world of giant cyclops and what have you, there was a pretty lady in Troy who happened to be black. But I’m going to watch it first before I decide how I feel about all of this and if there's anything I should be outraged about.

Nolan didn't cast a black woman as Helen to get woke points. He did it to piss off the losers. You're exposing yourself, you played right into his trap. Now we all know who the losers are. It's not too late, though

Why is no one making movies for those of us who just don’t want to have to look at colored people in our movies?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I haven't had this much irrational pushback since I had the audacity to say Hollywood makes movies targeting certain genders.

Back to the movie this thread is about, I hope it’s good. Think Nolan has been one of the very best directors out there lately. Loved Oppenheimer.
