Srsly, though: this episode was waaaaay better than the premiere. They may have telegraphed the janitor thing (and they've done he "janitor who's secretly behind it all" thing before), but there were some heavy scenes in this episode and some arresting visuals. The walk down the corridor with the sick kids (thanks, Fox, for all of the sick kid imagery this week) and the stuff in the pool was far more gripping than the screech cutaways in Episode 1. You could tell this was a James Wong episode. And even though I was railing against dream sequences in The Revenant thread just a few days ago, the dream sequences here worked for me because they were okay with being just a bit corny. Pacing was way better, although it seemed to rush to a conclusion late.

Those dream sequences--and the whole question about alien-hybrid blood--allowed this to be a backdoor-mythology episode, too, along the lines of Leonard Betts and Red Museum. Liked that.

Super, super excited for next week's episode.

Totally agree, last night's episode was WAY better than the premier. I felt the nostalgia all the way through the hour and it felt pretty damn good to have a real/new X-files episode on again. If they keep up this kind of quality, I hope they can bring it back for a full season next year. I keep reading that next week's episode (while more comedic) is even better.

I don't remember The X-Files being particularly cheesy back in the day. Not originally, at least. But my wife keeps saying, "Oh man, it's so cheesy! I fucking love it!" while we're watching these new episodes.

There's plenty of cheese in some of those early episodes.

MULDER: Get this, Scully. The lab analysis from the first bit of fiber that was found just came back. It's lace.

SCULLY: Chantilly lace?

MULDER: You know what I like.
And that's from what I consider to be the best episode of the entire series!

Maybe, but I'd still like it to be limited--10 to 12 episodes tops. There was so much filler in the original series, and I'd hate for there to be lower-quality episodes in the new run as well.

Watching the second episode now. Mulders tie isn't bland enough.

Right. And?
It's just a cheesy, groan-y sort of line. It's nearly a dad joke. Maybe your wife was talking about a different type of cheese, but that sort was always my favorite.

Where is a good start point for this show? Does it start good or does it take a while to find its feet?

Start at the pilot. It's great right off the bat. The first five or six seasons are golden.

Earlier in the thread, I made a list of 10-12 episodes per season that are must-watch (through Season 5, I think). I'll try to search for it soon.

I think it would be a big mistake to skip around during the golden years of The X-Files.

There are still some "meh" episodes in seasons 3-4. But beware episode guides that tell you to just watch the mythology/conspiracy episodes, because some of the best character work comes in MOTW episodes.

IMDB Ratings for X-Files trended by Ep/Season:
http://graphtv.kevinformatics.com/tt0106179

There are highlights scattered throughout each season so you can't really pinpoint a "golden era", but strong peaks at the start of S6.
