I think the reason these instrumentals feel hollow is because they weren't meant to be instrumentals, but songs that would eventually have vocals. Maybe that's why they sound like sketches. There are spaces carved out in the composition for a vocal melody line, and the arrangements accommodating it. I don't think there's a song in here that was written as a complete instrumental. I could be way off, though.

Also: am I hearing things, or were parts of "Rearranged Furniture" reworked into the intro to "Johnny Guitar"?

you're not the first person to say that. I'm going to listen for it the next time I put that on.

Oh no, I'm gonna go nuts. For that song?! Absolutely. It deserves it.
Sure. That was in response to the 'Pearl jam should get rid of eddie this is so good' comments :)
In all seriousness, Pearl Jam should stay Pearl Jam. But I would LOVE to hear Stone, Jeff, Mike and Matt do a project together, without Ed, under a different name. And I'd be willing to bet it would be better than the last three Pearl Jam albums.

I never thought they lost the capabliity of writing good music, it just seems their idea of what a pj record should be is hindering them

Great solo by mike on 10 billion years
Totally agree.

Also, maybe the rest of the band should stick up for themselves more, instead of just deferring to Ed automatically all the time. If that's in fact what's going on. I don't know if it is. But it sure seems like it lately.

How fucking weird is it that Pearl Jam just randomly decided to self-title an album 15 years into their band-hood and put an avocado on the cover?

Seriously it's an 11 on a 1-10 weird scale.

I don't think they need to make an album without Ed; I just wish the band's scope was wide enough that a song like this could have a chance in hell of getting on a record.

I'm not sure I care about all that. I'm not saying they should tour without Ed. Just record a record without him. They don't even have to call it Pearl Jam. Call it something else. Call it Stoney AtoneMENT & the Shit-stain Carwash for all I care.

A lot of casual/former Pearl Jam fans and non-fans have asked me that in RL. I usually just say that I'm a big fan of guacamole, so I have no issue with it.

Given that it was their first album free from their label deal, I'd call it a 4.

Well, right. In an ideal world, of course. But since that isn't happening, then I'll close my eyes and wish for something even more impossible.

At this point I think I'd have a hard time attending a Pearl Jam concert with either Mike, Ed, Stone, or Jeff out of the mix.

Matt can be replaced. Boom can go. Other than that it's not really Pearl Jam to me anymore.

Soft, butter inner soul encased in a hard, leathery shell. Just like the music.

I'd be all for a reduced role for Ed musically/sound wise and give control to Stone and Jeff. Could Ed just acquiesce for one record? Probably not.

I generally feel the same way, and none of this other than an occasional Ten Billion Years (which I like significantly more than sunburn) and maybe the demo version of Big Wave is going to get regular listens once the newness wears off, but it's still a cool Easter egg, and it is cool to see how some songs developed and intriguing to get a glimpse down the road not taken.
I enjoy but have no real use for the rough vocal demos of the songs that ended up on S/T. I've listened once and I'll listen again someday but I won't be revisiting them any time soon.

And I tend to agree that PJ isn't usually a band that does much for me in instrumental form. But there are a couple here that I really like, or in the case of Cloud, LOVE. And I think Jorge's right. They aren't finished. Maybe someday we'll get versions with rough vocals. Who knows?

But there are a couple of things here to get really excited about, I think. The crown jewel begin 10 Billion Years. Which, fine, isn't better than Sunburn, but that's hardly the point. It's still fucking wonderful.

Exactly. I'm gonna say, there's no way he could do that. But a boy can dream can't he?

Sunburn is one of my favorite things Pearl Jam has ever done so it would be hard for anything to top that for me. But 10 Billion Years is really, really good.
