It couldn't be any worse than Jar Jar Binks or that ridiculous muppet song / scene in the special edition of ROTJ at Jabba's palace. Two of the worst things to ever make their way to the big screen.

JJ's pretty much the only reason I have any interest at all in seeing this new Star Wars movie.

I hope they go into more detail about Jedi stuff...training, light saber construction, how to become a ghost, etc...The Clone War cartoon shorts went into it some, and it was more interesting than pretty much anything in the prequels.
oh hell naw. the force should be a mystery.

I mean, I'd probably still see it eventually. Like on Netflix or something.

Yeah, adequacy's a pretty high mark these days, eh?

While I don't believe that there's any chance of actual talent ending up in charge of any of this, there's a pretty big jump between "eh, this fuck up will do," and getting JJ-jazzed.

I've never been cool enough to have my opinion carry any real weight. So, I have no problem telling anyone that I actually like JJ Abrams.

he's alright. with lowered expectations.

I mean he's not a master or anything. He's not Kubrick or Lynch or Malick or even Fincher. He's not operating on that kind of level. So if that's what you mean by "lowered expectations," I agree.

He can't write for shit. But he does everything else well, I think. And that's why he doesn't write very often anymore. Or if he does, its' with partners.

Harmless, don't bother with the second Star Trek film.
Massive let down.

Also, I really don't believe JJ is the man for the Star Wars job.
But we'll see I guess

I think most folks are on your team, dime. At least most folks on the internet. But it's interesting to me how many people I've talked to (not saying you're one of them) that thought JJ injected too much "Star Wars" into Star Trek AND don't want him touching Star Wars.

Whatever. Like you said, we'll see. But I'm a huge Star Trek fan; lifelong. I loved what Abrams did to revitalize that franchise. I even loved Into Darkness. So, as someone who has never really been a huge Star Wars fan, I'm super pumped to see if he can do the same to that franchise.

Not the hero we need...

...but the one we can realistically expect, when Disneycorp is hungry to sell toys and tshirts in a world full of cheap looking $150 million budget movies that prefer a reductionist take to plot and character because, lets face it (lights cigar, puts feet up on desk, gestures out window), we're selling shiny to shitheads, out there.

That's not what everyone I know has said, nor any of the reviews I've read. But hey, we'll see.

Yeah, Rotten Tomatoes gives the first ST film 95%, and the second one 87%. I'm good with those odds, and I really don't care how the films add to or take away from the original Star Trek, because I don't really like it. So I'm bound to like the reboots. I get the complain that there was maybe too much Star Wars in Star Trek, but Wars was always better anyway so I guess they improved Trek. In any case, if Abrams is really into Star Wars, is there a better director for the job now? Also, I thought Star Trek was written well. It was minimal, streamlined, and he didn't add a whole bunch of shit that didn't belong. Other directors would've made it bloated. That's actually what makes Episode 4 my favourite Star Wars film. It's heavy on character development and scenery and pretty thin on action. That's what I like.

Just to clarify, I'm usually the eternal optimist about films I want to like. This one just didn't hit me the right way at all. It was always always gonna have a hard time following up the first.

I'm wondering are they planning on continuing ST as a series of films? And Is JJ on board for all? It wasn't the direction I didn't like. Just the plot really.

They are going forward with a third. But it looks like they're gonna push it for a 50th anniversary release. JJ will still be working on Star Wars. So, looks like he's out. We know that Damon Lindelof is also out as a writer for the next one, but Orci and Kurtzman will be back.

Well, I certainly don't want more midechlorian talk, that's for sure. I also think going into Jedi stuff can still keep mystery to it without getting too technical / cheesy / stupid. Think back to Luke's training in Empire. That was pretty cool, and kept the mystery about it. I'm just thinking of more stuff like that, but not repeating it necessarily, just expanding.
