Good man!
Everyone knows that Gretzky is the "great one" but somehow Mario is so much more likeable.

As a player for sure, but he has had some missteps as an owner. I seem to recall a rather hypocritical stance on injuries/dirty players (something along those lines) while employing Matt Cooke.

Whoa, really? I can't imagine anyone thinking of Gretzky as anything but "likeable".

Yeah, I actually think Gretzky was much more likeable than Mario.

Don't worry, my Jays team is going to take over in the next MLB franchise tournament.

I knew a guy whose law firm had to represent Gretzky for something, and he said he was one of the biggest douchebags he'd ever encountered.

I know someone who was in a bar when Gretzky walked in, and he spent the whole evening sitting and talking to random people who wanted to meet him. Lemieux walked into the same bar the same night and didn't acknowledge anyone who tried to talk to him.

It's really easy to base opinions off of things someone else says based on one situation, but this is literally the first time I've ever heard someone say Gretzky is anything other than a stand-up guy.

Yeah, I dunno. I mean, I don't really care either way. I'd never heard any stories one way or the other about Gretzky before this one. But it was one that ran the span of like a year or so, and (at least in this setting, and according to this story) Gretzky came off as pretty insufferable. Apparently on conference calls and in correspondence he'd refer to himself in third person as "The Great One."

Mario always had the reputation for being very private and quiet. They say it softened up a bit after having cancer, but I guess he's still a guy who very much likes to keep to himself.

Gretzky is at best the third greatest player ever.
