Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
I don't think there's all that much complaining being done about the number of films....it's more a growing presumption that this level of attention and monetary/cultural dominance isn't likely to maintain forever and ever. It's really down to the fact that 3 of the 5 most hyped/ticketed movies each year is a superhero film...eventually, that has to experience a dip of some kind. Just like Westerns had, the first round of big budget sci fi had, disaster films had, and high school horror movies had....eventually, they reduced their cultural grip and continued onwards at much more proportionate levels, experiencing the occasional trending bump or rebirth.
After a decade of superhero movies being a constant source of buzz, of course some people are going to be ready for them to not be THIS SUMMER'S FUCKING MONSTER MOVIE for a while. That's a frustration born of hype more than anything....and seeing it as "complaining about the frequency" seems to me like a knee jerk misinterpretation.

Agreed. Entirely. Excellent post, sir.McParadigm wrote:I don't think there's all that much complaining being done about the number of films....it's more a growing presumption that this level of attention and monetary/cultural dominance isn't likely to maintain forever and ever. I imagine the only way to make that happen is to cut down on the frequency of superhero movies.McParadigm wrote:people are going to be ready for them to not be THIS SUMMER'S FUCKING MONSTER MOVIE for a while.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for the next summer movie sub-genre to give the superhero franchises the boot:
The White House under siege genre.

Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
A good friend of mine is the biggest Superman fan I've ever met. He saw it tonight and here's what he had to say:
"Ooooohhhh Joe. Sigh. The first third of the movie was enjoyable, then it went south after he put the costume on. It turned into a Michael Bay/'Splosion fest. No character development, a confusing plot, tedious, tedious, tedious action...at one point I wanted to get up and walk around for awhile. I started to realize half way thru that I didn't care about the outcome. (There were moments, but very few.) Superman Returns had better characters and story...if that tells you anything."
Just one guy's opinion. But he's a HUGE fan of the character. To the point of a fault. He's the guy this movie is aimed at, for what it's worth.

Listen, I'm going in with an open mind. Like I said before, I want to like it. I didn't get to go to the avant-premiere a few nights ago but my friends who went were all raving about it (to be fair, though, I never agree with them on anything). So I dunno. I'll watch it tomorrow and report back. I won't be crushed if I hate it. But it would be nice to have a good Superman flick.

Agreed. It would be lovely to have a good Superman flick. I hope you like it, man. I really do. But I've officially decided to wait for Blu Ray/Netflix. Unless you love it. That might make me rethink things, because I really respect your opinion. We'll see.theplatypus wrote:Heheh.turned2black wrote:Sounds like a Zack Snyder movie.

But, like I've said before, I never WANT movie to be bad. I hope it's worth it.

Seeing it tomorrow with my brother and sister-in-law and she loves Superman, but my old man keeps reiterating that there will never be a better Superman than Christopher Reeve. He might have a point. You don't see the charisma in Brandon Routh or Henry Cavill that you saw in Christopher Reeve.
I might be able to get to an E-bow.

Poor Mike. He's never done a talk show like this before. He seemed like a nervous wreck. But very down to earth, that's why I like him. His Bill Murray and Sidney Poitier stories are great.

I read somewhere on the Web, that there are talks of Nolan doing a AQUAMAN movie. Ryan Gosling supposedly auditioned for the part.
Anybody else have any info on this? Probably BS

I especially enjoyed the ease with which he transitioned between Clark's awkward socializing and Superman's "I'm going to fuck the shit out of you, and you're going to thank me for it" leer.nightmareblack0206 wrote:Your old man is right! Will wrote:Seeing it tomorrow with my brother and sister-in-law and she loves Superman, but my old man keeps reiterating that there will never be a better Superman than Christopher Reeve. Plus, Christopher Reeves's Superman could apparently walk to the north pole in a goddamn windbreaker, sans powers.

Seems like the perfect time for Ant Man then.McParadigm wrote:I don't think there's all that much complaining being done about the number of films....it's more a growing presumption that this level of attention and monetary/cultural dominance isn't likely to maintain forever and ever. Re: Movie: Man Of Steel (06-14-13)
Man, I really hope I like this movie. Not sure if I'm gonna see it in theaters or wait for bluray though. I just don't really enjoy the theater experience...I have crowds, and the inevitable asshole(s) who talk too loud and/or text. Watching at home = better experience for me.
Having said that though, I have a gift card for AMC that I haven't used yet (had it for over a year), so maybe I'll finally use it on this movie, or This Is The End, or Gatsby.
re: Reeves, loved his Superman. Part 3 with Richard Pryor sucked, and I don't really remember part 4 that well, but the first one was fantastic.
