I'm done woth my tin foil hat but I've always believed film was used as propaganda and training material for our species. To prepare us for stuff and blind us to other stuff.
But just imagine we do get this sort of first contact with an alien species. And trump is president.
He'd either ask their help to build a trump resort in the moon or mars or he'd nuke em.
Scary 2 in the morning can't sleep cos of this shit post.

Hollywood has been putting out "alien" movies for damn near a century, dime.

Seriously, how long do they need to tell us the aliens are bad and we should kill them all?

I'm convinced.

This movie might have convinced me that maybe we shouldn't contact aliens. A while back, I probably would have rolled my eyes at this movie for being cynical about humanity. In light of recent events, it seems upsettingly plausible.
I actually think the movie only got interesting once the humans became aggressive. It got very heady, and tried to work through a lot of big ideas. The approach to time travel was novel and compelling. However, the ultimate conclusion about "embracing" life despite the foregone conclusion of death seems too simple and trite to justify all the portentous buildup. Things wind up being much more Contact than 2001.
As usual, Villenueve shoots himself in the foot. This thing is waaaaaaay too somber and arty, and quickly becomes tedious. It takes far too long for fucking everything to happen. His arthouse vanity swallows the movie; I was longing for the confidence and genre pleasures of a mainstream craftsman.

I thought the same. At first I thought it was ridiculous, but now I'm convinced humanity would collectively shit the bed just like in the movie.

So this is what it's like to lose all hope

The aliens will fix us though.

I think we all want a good, realistic-ish alien contact movie bad enough that when one comes out that isn't terrible we jump and down; I just happen to think this one was full of problems.

The Charlie Sheen Arrival movie is way better than this.

Also, we already have Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which will never be surpassed.

Frankly I'm shocked that you of all people wouldn't appreciate a Sheen movie

The non-linear time stuff was mishandled, but even as a critic, I'm not willing to put in the thought it would require to make it come through the screen better.
The aliens were awful. Conceptually they get a B-, but the execution gets a D. Also, even 30 seconds of imagining what their home planet must be like and I'm bored out of my skull.
I don't want to get into the military level issues because despite the clusterfuck everything at the base camp and worldwide seemed to be, it's not so hard to believe the accuracy of that kind of disorganization.
I will reiterate that Amy Adams was quite good.
Everyone and everything else seemed so plot driven and tedious that it may as well been the pilot for a new series on the USA Network (that I would probably binge watch on Netflix because I hate myself).

Sheen as a scientist and the chicken leg people were pretty funny.

The really sad part is that some scientists theorize that any civilization advanced enough for interstellar travel will likely destroy themselves with said advancements before they can even leave their solar system, which is likely what will happen to us as well. For humans it looks like climate change will probably destroy us before we can make it out into the universe. So these meetings will probably never happen, let alone go poorly.

Member that Battleship movie? Those aliens forgot to bring flying ships and laser guns.
