That may be true, I'm not sure. But I'm not finding that on RM. Here, the people who are most disappointed with the new stuff tend to be those that love the middle period, specifically Binaural and Riot Act. Very little of that material was as heavy as the early stuff, and that period was really when PJ had come into their own as an acoustic band, among plenty of other things. What they want is the depth and creativity.
I wasn't talking about RM definitely not the regular posters. Sadly RM isn't very representative of the majority of music listeners or PJ fans for that matter. And it's not about overanalysing but about having an above average interest and consequentially knowledge of music in it's various aspects.
To go back to my original post the only thing i believe they should do from now on is do whatever the fuck they want because no matter what they do it will always be considered awful shit by some people/fans/reviewers whatever and is been like this forever to the point there's this whole mythology about their post Vitalogy studio output that isn't that far away from a respectable conspiracy theory. Just look about all those posts by people who refuse to acknowledge someone could genuinely like Riot Act. Mostly trolls or similar but still. There isn't a way for them to age gracefully, be cool or whatever generally speaking even if you and i may agree on what that would be it's irrelevant at the end of the day. If you think about it they could have aged so much worst it's not even funny.

Yeah, I agree with this. We're not all going to be happy, whatever they do. I'm OK being content, I guess, and I'm happy to not feel like I have to jump ship.

I think that reputation of putting out records that feel, as Ed would put it, like homework to listen to is something that may be bothering them at this point and may have some influence on their post RA music. At the very least i can imagine them not being ok with a reputation like that and it seems to be implied in many introduction to reviews of their records.
I think Sony made that up around No Code and it stuck. I find it realistic enough that a label like Epic makes shit like this up to hype their records especially at a point in a career like PJ's was at the time.
