Even I’m not buying that money went to dead people ‘accidentally’. It’s far too vast an amount for it to be oversight

At least some of that is probably because, in order to push money out to people losing their jobs as quickly as possible, we had to rely on old census data.dimejinky99 wrote:Even I’m not buying that money went to dead people ‘accidentally’. It’s far too vast an amount for it to be oversight

Only $1.4 billion doesn't sound too bad at all relatively speaking.

Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
Yeah that's a dumb tweet, I would way rather lose 1.4 billion out of a 290 billion dollar project than to delay payments while we worry about these kinds of mistakes. Trump is incompetent in a lot of ways but that feels like a necessary cost of expediency.

My wife's cousin's grandmother passed away in early march and received a check. They got notice from the government that they had to return the Social Security check she had received for the month, but nothing about the stimulus check. (At least that's the second or third hand version of the story that I heard.)bada wrote:My mother in law got a check she died in Feb.
Stuff like that's just going to happen when you're trying to push out a huge sum of money as fast as possible.

My grandma's check was addressed to (and I'm omitting her actual name here) "Jane Doe [deceased]."McParadigm wrote:At least some of that is probably because, in order to push money out to people losing their jobs as quickly as possible, we had to rely on old census data.dimejinky99 wrote:Even I’m not buying that money went to dead people ‘accidentally’. Are you people able to cash these checks of the deceased?

My dad didn't try. He figured the bank would be unimpressed by his attempt.tragabigzanda wrote:Are you people able to cash these checks of the deceased?

The one I was talking about wasn't actually a check, it was direct deposit for the married couple amount instead of the single person amount. From what I heard the family advised him not to spend it and to be prepared to give it back if asked.tragabigzanda wrote:Are you people able to cash these checks of the deceased?

Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
What I've heard from others is that the money will have to be paid back. So, yeah, probably best to hang on to it for a bit. Just in case.4/5 wrote:The one I was talking about wasn't actually a check, it was direct deposit for the married couple amount instead of the single person amount. What happens if someone votes early or by mail and then dies before election day?

Maybe they sent the payments out to dead people so they could whine about how flawed mail in voting would be?
