“In hindsight, I realised that the ‘Masseduction’ [album] and tour was so incredibly strict, whether it was the outfits I was wearing that literally constricted me, to the show being tight and the music being angular and rigid. When I wrapped that, I was like ‘oh, I just want things that are fluid and wiggly and I want this music to look like a Cassavetes film’.”

Thank goodness. She puts it far more eloquently than I ever could, but that is exactly how I felt about the most recent St. Vincent era.It was to the point of lifelessness for me

Masseduction is my second favorite St Vincent record so I can't agree with "lifeless" but there is an angular (her word) quality that she definitely pushed to the max that I can understand folks finding off-putting. I'm glad she's not consciously trying to push that quality further.
