I don't know. I've never been in a band. But was it that difficult for three albums? I feel like the stuff you're pointing out speaks to my criticism of the midterm day Radiohead. Which again is not to say that a band should stagnate.

Well I don’t think the lush production is a bad thing, or even inherently limiting; I just think that some energy can get lost the more stuff gets piled on, so they gravitate towards certain sounds that allow lots of cooks in the kitchen.

If I had one gripe about mid-period Radiohead, it would be their reliance on big crescendos. From Kid A onward, they seemed to get over the idea that every song had to have a low point and a high point, and could simply exist as static mood pieces.

And that’s what I’m getting with The Smile, too. It’s just that by virtue of having less instruments, the mood can be a bit more driving and less ethereal.
