It also puts the claimed death toll of the Wagner group in Syria in a bit more context.

Are there any more sanctions to levy before European banks totally nope out and we lose sanctions as an effective tool?

Yeah, they probably developed a calculated stance of aggressive, systematic reproach for targeting American lives, and then when the news leaked decided to pretend they’d skipped their own intel briefings instead because in an election year, standing up for US soldiers plays really badly.

I was spitballing at what an appropriate response would be. What would it look like to you?

I suppose one more significant response would be to induce the Russian speaking Jihadis in Syria to return to Chechnya and sponsor terrorism/ sepratism.

Separately, regarding my last point RE: sanctions, are we close to the brink after blowing up the Iran deal?

This is absolutely true, and it seems to happen all the time in American politics, especially in regards to the Trump presidency.
