I'll wait until every board member has weighed in before I make my decision, but so far I'm getting the sense that it's well loved and worth a watch.

Manhunter.
Another great Michael Mann´s movie. I do believe the Hannibal series was better with this story, but it also had more time to develop the relationship between Graham and Lecter.

What movie is it where the (main?) male character is going to have a kid and he says something to the effect of “he won’t be like me, he’ll be smart” all teary eyed?

Yeah this is probably the scene I’m thinking of. Batman Begins.
I often forget how good this movie is. Everyone is top notch, even Katie Holmes! She is indeed awesome here, and i think it would have been a more tragic loss in TDK.
Also, Scarecrow is great.
