Honestly with this band the only songs i ever skipped (regularly) on a studio album were Hey Foxy and LTRP/Future Days on Lightning Bolt.

But a year in and Gigaton is just such a massive jump in quality above LB. For me at least the first time in their career where they've released an album that was just so significantly better than its predecessor.

The only 2 songs I like on this are quick escape and 7:00.

Interesting perspective. IMHO Riot Act -> Avocado also falls into this category but i know that is a minority opinion here.



As for Gigaton, it’s fallen off my playlist after a year. The lack of touring makes it feel like a high quality b-sides collection.

This is really cool and interesting. It got me thinking about my own experience. Riot Act was definitely an out-of-the-gate improvement on and significantly better than its predecessor, for me. But that might have been the first (and only until Gigaton).

I ended up liked Vitalogy and No Code and Yield more than Vs (and in some cases Ten). But that took a lot of time.

This is an interesting thread idea. I'd love to hear what others' experiences were.

I'm with you, i do like Vitalogy more than Vs. and depending on the day of the week i could take Avocado over Riot Act, but in both cases the preference is relatively minor.

At this point i pretty firmly have Lightning Bolt as the bands worst studio effort and a decent drop off even from Backspacer. Gigaton i've got ahead of anything post Binaural for sure. Just a massive difference in quality between the two.

I did like LB much more than Backspacer from the jump. I guess Gigaton is the third PJ record for me that is clearly better than the previous at the time of release.

I can’t remember ever getting the sense that a record massively outperformed the prior one until Gigaton. The rest always were exciting because they felt new and it seemed at first a jump in quality just because the other songs were so lived in.

I can’t really fathom getting another jump like this into the next one because I think this is pretty close to as good an album they can create at this stage in their career, but I am sure I can be surprised.

Agreed, I was so relieved to hear a progression, it's been a long time. My fave PJ album since Riot Act...although tastes change so who knows if that opinion will change also..
