It’s sort of like how you regularly write “the virus won,” as if the virus pulled some wildly different tactic here than in other countries and our disproportionate suffering is all down to the actions of the virus.

We couldn’t take the steps that all those successful countries took to contain it because too many Americans care about and believe whatever nonsense the president says. We couldn’t use the lag in cases to build up our capacity because the president is at the center of federal pandemic response planning. Whether you have any interest in the cause and effect of the president of the United States advancing conspiracies about COVID is irrelevant to whether or not it matters.
