Well if you like. But just there you have:

Vedder: And most bands, the longer they play together, they will become more comfortable. You go from punk-rock songs to contemporary music. It's a trap
It's accomplishment for them to be dated and contemporary at the same time, isn't it?
:?

I... I don't know what you mean by that.
I had in mind the critics of Siren's being an 80's power ballad.

Oh, OK. Yeah I don't mind that so much as the few nods to the contemporary radio ballad. I don't know about Nickelback or top 40 country etc. but I do hear Take That / Gary Barlow or Robbie Williams in places. I think the song is great but it probably counts as something Ed would have never done at one point.

I don't think it's anywhere near a real possibility considering how much "Ed solo" ballads he writes for PJ records but i think doing something in a 100% artistic autonomy would all but hurt him and consequentially Pearl Jam. Just taking BS in consideration JB, SOS and UK could have been much more interesting or at the very least less cheesy if Ed relayed only on his own strengths and not BOB's and the band's as far as SOS is concerned.
I'm onboard with all of this; Into the Wild is a more satisfying record than anything the band's done in years.

But isn't this Mike's song with Ed's lyrics? I don't think you could write Blood type lyrics with this music. I personally love the lyrics and the song. That being said, Future Days is all Ed.

Yeah but FD is just Ed. It's not remarkable but it doesn't sound like a boy band either. Sirens kind of does. As I said, I do like it a lot, I'm just pointing out that it touches on styles that Ed has said he never would, which was meant to be an amusing comment more than a serious one. I'm not sure the only possibilities were schlock love ballad or "Blood" either, not sure where that comes from. We don't really know where Mike's Pink Floyd ideas stop and BoB's radio-friendly rock ballad ideas start, but the song is a slightly jarring mix of both.

You're right. We don't really know what Mike came in with and what (and who) it became. For me there are parts that I want to sing along loud to, but it is still missing that cliched hooky chorus. We were listening to 80's radio at work the other day, and Sirens does not remind me of Def Leppard.

We don't but if the vignette is an indication....

That's true, it does hold itself back. That's an old PJ trick, to take things only so far into cheesy territory but just hold back. This might be the furthest they've ever gone, but it's lacking that catchy chorus or any catchy musical hooks.

I was wondering this, are the vignettes stripped down portions of what the song became? Or the original riffs?

I checked that interview because i wanted context for that quote. I don't think he really implied PJ would never went there i think if anything he implied they might.

Sounds like the original riff to me and considering Mike is so proud of it i doubt it went anywhere he wouldn't want it to go.

Guys, what Mike is playing on the vignette is exactly the same as what he's playing on the record. It's on a twelve-string. It might not sound clear because it's got piano over it, but I've compared them a few times and it's not different. It's the pre-chorus going into the first chorus that he plays.

Ed's quote was about the way bands work or better put how band dynamics influence music not about his writing as an individual.

It makes no difference. Ed was speaking about where bands go, not solo artists.

That's my point responding to "but Sirens is Mike's" because it's not relevant in the given context.

The vignettes were an excellent way to build excitement and pitched perfectly at the target audience. Who else is really gonna care to watch them?

But I wouldn't be taking any cues from them about the finished music really at all
