Prince Avalanche (now on Netflix Instant). I thought it was really good. Very compelling, very beautiful, worth a watch.
A note about the last twenty mins or so:
Spoiler: show
I'm not sure I loved the ending. The guys get drunk and end up painting crazy lines on the road and trashing their gear. I didn't like that. The movie had made their work look really beautiful, just aesthetically. It also seemed like good, important work. They were helping to re-build this community that had been ruined by fire, helping good people like that lady in the ruins. To trash that gear and paint crazy lines seemed disrespectful of that good work they were doing. It seemed almost like a betrayal of the first hour of the movie. The job wasn't to blame for their personal problems.
Also, I didn't get why that lady was some invisible ghost at the end. I think this story of these two men living together and learning and loving and thinking and working and fishing was magical enough. The movie didn't need to ram down our throats that this place and this experience was special and magical for them. I didn't see the need.
Also, the movie kind of ends with Emile Hirsch's seemingly inferior worldview winning out. "holy cow this was magical...ok let's go get our dicks wet."

prince avalanche was terrible. basically a film that is mediocre in every way and then imitates high art sporadically. I wanted to like it. was looking forward to one of those classic coming of age type films. and the setting was great

I disagree that it "imitates high art sporadically." I think it's an artful film made with an eye toward watchability and inclusivity of a slightly wider audience than a Herzog film would have (I use Herzog as an example only bc I can imagine him making a similar film). The movie still takes the time to appreciate the beauty of this work and this place. It gives Rudd and Hirsch the space to become real characters, and I think that they are both very successful. The movie might be a little confused about itself, and I think the ending reveals that, but I found it to be very compelling.

American Hustle. not great. Some great performances (not by Christian Bale), but overall seemed like style over substance. Actually it didn't have a lot of style either. Imitates Goodfellas or Casino, but isn't nearly as good.

I give it a C.

I assumed it would have characteristics of Goodfella & Casino, but what's the beef with Bale about? I'm seeing it tomorrow.

It's hard to buy him as a fat schlub. he just looks like Christian Bale ate a lot of cheeseburgers and picked up a Brooklyn accent. Maybe it's just me, but he seems miscast.

Watched "Prisoners" last night, B+, it was predictable but still suspenseful.
