OK, I watched the EPK again and enjoyed it more than I have before. The most annoying part is when Ed says songwriting is an "arduous process; I go at it every waking hour and maybe a few while I'm sleeping." And I'm just not sure I believe his songwriting lately has been arduous. Wasn't he saying during Backspacer that if it starts to feel like homework and takes more than 5 minutes he's not interested?

Yeah I know. Check my next post. I'm not 100% sure you change your feelings about that so much in such a short time, though. I mean, my thoughts about playing the drums have been virtually the same since I was a teenager. But as I say, maybe it's not writing the songs as much as staying interested. That's where the work's put in maybe.

On the Backspacer approach, I think it was a conscious choice not to overwork or dwell on ideas that didn't click right away. More of an exercise than a definition of his "approach". It was something he kind of had to do for ITW and I think he wanted to see how it translated in Pearl Jam.

Another thing suggesting that his "aesthetic" changes with each album, maybe? That's probably a good thing. The arduous process he's talking about may be changing it up, making sure the music-making doesn't get stale. I'm sure that's getting harder and harder as they get older.

In general, these dudes are way more self aware than some on RM give them credit for. Music has been their life and they think about it constantly. They may not always know how they're perceived in certain corners, but I guarantee they understand how their work and songwriting process fits into the larger context of their career. It is their career, after all.

I agree, I think that's what I'm saying. They're just a rock band and probably find it refreshing to be able to do what they want, even if people don't like it. But as they get older, what they want to be looks more and more like a classic rock band with fewer experiments and surprises.

I actually think it would be straight up badass if they would write a song a'la Neil's Walk On...a sort of messagey self-aware "yeah, we know some people arent gonna get it, but..." track.

but their's would be about how they write what they feel, and that's gonna mean soft pop music and old people stuff sometimes, and tough shit.

Since songwriting is arduous, We can brainstorm lyrics for them.
