Ema. Wow! A really strange, really beautiful movie. Very glad I dove in without having read a plot synopsis, because the moment when everything starts cohering after the somewhat disorienting first quarter is really great. Gorgeous movie with a lot of really powerful images, fantastic music (Nicolas Jaar!) and some truly devastating moments. Wish I could have watched this on the big screen. It's streaming on MUBI

Re: What movies are you watching?
i saw it two month ago maybe? I loved the cinematography and how was shot. Gorgeous, beautiful, stylish. Everything i love on cinema. But the script was just...far fetched. After a while i didnt cared much about the story and focused on the visuals.Jorge wrote:Ema. Wow! A really strange, really beautiful movie. The story is definitely outlandish, but I'm more interested in the emotions it evokes, the themes it explores, the film's wonderful aesthetics, and individual scenes that sometimes feel like a fever dream of dance and desire. I think this is Larraín's strongest movie

A ho hum sequel that tries to bring back a little bit of that Disney innocence from way back when. Trip a Little Light Fantastic sequence is greatMonkey_Driven wrote:Mary Poppins Returns

It's a spiritual remake that almost gets there. I'm happy it exists as a way to tell the story again for new fans.

It had no charm. My kids love the original and hated the remake.Monkey_Driven wrote:It's a spiritual remake that almost gets there. I'm happy it exists as a way to tell the story again for new fans.

I thought it charm. Different strokes. My beefs are mostly with Lin-Manuel's dancing skills and the hit or miss soundtrack. Someone like Justin Timberlake as the Jack character would have worked better.LetMeSleep wrote:It had no charm. Haven't seen Ema but I think Neruda is Larraín's best work. Agreed that Jackie was just okay--a decent movie by a good filmmaker.VinylGuy wrote:yeah, its his best. Jackie was fine. Kinda boring. And i havent seen Neruda. I should because one of my partners produced it....but fuck that.

I Used To Go Here.
Im surprised talented people like Gillian Jacobs and Jemaine Clement chose to do this movie. Did they got paid a lot? because the script is trash. The movie looks awful, with some of the worst framing i saw in my life. The other actors are so awful its embarrassing.
Jesus Hollywood used to do this types of movie so well, and now they are just the worst piece of crap out there.

Re: What movies are you watching?
Had our semi-perennial viewing of Boogie Nights last night. Damn fine still. Might be my favorite movie.
Being John Malk a few nights ago. Didn't quite hit the spot like previous viewings had. A little dull and bitter tasting. Great movie for the right mood. Didn't fit this time.

Re: What movies are you watching?
It seems everything Charlie Kaufman touches has this whole pathetic aura about it. Can be fun, romantic, quirky, clever and darkly humorous but just seems pathetic to me these days. Also in interviews he just seems to have a really hard time with life. A lost soul criticizing and over/wrongly analyzing the world. He has a lot of healing to do.
