In his defense, I was 10 months old when In Through the Out Door came out and I don’t consider myself a Post-Presence Money Grab fan.

Ed only wrote one song (Porch) on Ten and two on Vs (RVM, Small Town).

That was the whole basis of the band's so-called 'power struggle', that Stone was displaced as the band's de facto leader and musical director (arguably for the worse).

Lyricist would be accurate.

For the worse is obviously subjective, Vitalogy and No Code clearly being Vedder forward but Yield was definitely a rock back... think we've all been through the ins-n-outs of the chronology sufficiently at this point.

the album's a solid 3.5-4/5 for me

that's up from 1-3 (the last 3 albums; I think I give ST a three, BS a 2, LB a 1-1.5)

every PJ album from Riot Act backwards is 4-5/5

its not that i dont like it, i rank my pj albums in terms on how much i wanna listen to them. I kinda like them all but these days im not eager to put vitalogy in my turntable

But Vitalogy was always difficult for me i guess...the harsh hardcore sound was something i needed time to get into back in the day

I agree that Matt Cameron joining was a kind of nail in the coffin for the band (at least, the version of the band they were from 1990-1998), but I can't blame him for that. I think he's just on a different musical wavelength than the other guys.

I get why the arrangement works: he seems like a very cool guy, I'd want to hang out with him too. And it's a great, steady paycheck for Matt and I'm sure the other guys are nice enough to work with.

But that combined with Ed's increasing comfort being the band's musical dictator director - yeah, the situation's terminal.

I think quick escape is a key song on this album, and I've never really liked it for some reason. I was tired of it before it grew on me. The tracks I do like still hold up, but I don't listen to this as an album from front to back.

Ill listen to these usually.

Love MC and want this to continue, but he was really just too good/technical for them. Not the right fit. He's from the same place/time and obviously they make it work, but...Dave A prob was the best fit. Jack is my fave but Dave A... lets be honest.

I reject the premise that Matt is somehow a bad fit. Binaural and Riot Act are both stellar largely because of him, and he shines on a number of tracks since then.

Ed, Stone, and Mike’s songwriting have all gone downhill.

Ed has leaned too hard into the idea that his words matter as much as the music/feeling.

The production has gotten less rewarding with repeat listens.

And their admitted chasing of musical ideas that they believe will translate well live is kind of the overarching umbrella under which the rest of these problems sit.
