10th album rumors and speculation

every time i see the "new post" icon illuminated for this thread, about 2% of me is excited that someone actually has posted new information on the album. i live in constant disappointment on this board.

I'm not sure what it's going to take for the two a youz to lower your expectations at this point. Maybe when we get to 200 pages you'll see this thread for what it really is: a swampy morass masterminded by Boom to slowly eat away at Pearl Jam's fanbase, leading to band breakup and finally Eddie all to himself on a quiet Hawaiian atoll.

But only 0.5% of the fanbase. You know, to be exact and all.

I feel the same way... but it is not in anticipation of new album news. I keep hoping that we get another run of 80s movies pictures.

When interviewed recently by Seattle's KIRO, the DJ said (and I'm paraphrasing) that he had previously told Mike that Backspacer was among his favorite Pearl Jam records. He then said that Mike replied the new one was going to be "even better." Then Mike chimed in, clarifying to "way better."

Also said, he's "been told by the powers that be I can't say anything about it yet because we are just mixing it right now... we don't have a date for it yet, but know that it's going to be WAY better than Backspacer, I think... I'm very happy about it."

So there you have it, book it, take it to the bank. Mike stresses the new album is going to be "way better" than Backspacer - he said this twice, with emphasis on the "way". On some level, he must agree with the criticism, no?

Listened to the interview...and whoever said in this thread that they are not showing much enthusiasm should listen to it aswell. Mike is very very excited and thinks is WAY, WAY better than Backspacer...

How long does mixing take? when was backspacer mixed? I hope the reason why Mike thinks its better than BS is because he has more solos.....

Those descriptions and Stone's 'it sounds like a pearl jam record' statement leave me worried. 2.5 ed acoustic based numbers, 2.5 garage punk numbers etc. you get the drift.
Are PJ records becoming as formulaic as some of their set lists?

it's statements like Mike's and Stone's that make me believe that all that analysis of album themes and narrative are moot points.

At this point I'd be inclined to agree with you. Most statements by band members in the run up to previous releases have been hyperbolic, at best. They're best ignored at this stage.

That sounds jaded and I'm not but if I can avoid getting excited, then it shouldn't matter when I hear it. I know I will be when it arrives.

Late September and before the fall dates is the latest rumour. Lets hope.

Backspacer came out the day before my birthday (whether you think that's a good birthday present or not). It'd be cool for it to happen again with this one.

I'm glad Mike seems excited about the new material. The last few years haven't exactly been the apex of my Pearl Jam fandom but I'm looking forward to checking out the new record.

Way better probably means that he wasn't told to make patterns and plan out his solos by Brendan. He's also pretty clear that the band can't go into too much detail yet which explains the lack of detail to date.

Overall, pretty excited about this.

One of the things I used to love most about this band was that their albums usually had a tight, unified concept to them, particularly (for example) Vitalogy, No Code, Yield. You could talk about how those albums were composed as a complete piece of work for ever, and we have done on this site. Maybe it's retrospect that allows it; I don't know, did PJ talk about those so blandly? I'm not sure.

The tone of the interviews is a little different, but overall I don't think they're really giving a whole lot more information than they give now. To me the really telling thing is when Stone says they're "just starting" in a February interview for a record that got released that August.
