Yeah, for a long time I couldn't shake the impression that Never Destination->Take the Long Way is where this album sags. But my appreciation for TTLW and Comes the Goes has grown, so when I think of those three as a mini-unit in the second half, everything works out fine.
5 stars.

sometimes I feel like Pearl Jam's transitioning between loud and soft songs sounds jarring and awkward, but not here: "Quick Escape" into "Alright"; "7 O'Clock" into "Never Destination"; "Take the Long Way" into "Buckle Up", all sound good

"Retrograde" is joyfully cheesy, but in a good way
"accelerate the change" is a good line

"Retrograde" definitely got my most-improved-player award last time I listened to Gigaton.

Yeah, this album is loaded with great transitions between songs.

I love Matt, but the rimshots in Retrograde are the worst part of the song.

it's one of only two places on Gigaton where I wish he'd been more inventive (the first being the intro to SBWM)

The hour it takes to listen to this album goes by much too fast.

Retrograde kinda feels like the closer, with River Cross as some kind of epilogue.

its maybe the first pj album with two distinct closers. Each wraps up a different through line on the record, though it I had to pick one I think River Cross is the true end

I've always considered Retrograde the penultimate track on Gigaton.
