I can't begin to comprehend the fixer video though, they should have gone balls to the wall acid trip happy, that would have made the song more tolerable. They possibly didn't care enough to come up with a concept.

An animated video for MYM could be aswesome, in the style of the cover.

I wish the song was a little more ragged. Like the chords before the bridge comes in should've been all discordant and shit and and the stops should've been less neat with the guitars stumbling a little.

I definitely get the Brain of J comparison, in fact MYM keeps turning into Brain of J when its stuck in my head.

You know, I find this stuff interesting, and I leave it on a word doc on my flash drive, but its always a remarkably frustrating thing to find.

Fixer and Just Breathe were slower starters, because Pearl Jam still hadnt really rejoined the rock radio movers and shakers yet. But they both went on to top 50,000 spins during their charting tenure (JB maybe as high as 65,000)(Given to Fly managed around 45,000). WWS was somewhere south of 35,000...possibly below 30,000. Neither I Am Mine nor Nothing as it Seems passed the 15,000 spin mark.

Of course none of this addresses audience size. Just Breathe had by far the biggest audience. Then Given, then Fixer, then WWS.

I see it as a middle of the road song. It gets better as the song progesses, but the first fifteen seconds or so is pretty boring. I like the layers of the song once we finally arrive at them, but something feels lacking. I didn't care for Backspacer and Avocado was marginally better so I'm hoping the record will be more like Avocado since it is evident we aren't ever going to get another No Code

Cause No Code didn't have habit or lukin . Odds are slim but I won't give up till I get the album. MYM is 4/5 for me.

But, I liked Habit and Lukin in the context of the album. Generally a lead single for a PJ album tries to represent what the whole album will be like and I would prefer not to have a whole album of fast seemingly unpolished songs. Hopefully they throw a few Who You Ares, Off He Goes, and Present Tenses in there. We shall see

I think "Dream a Little Dream" is one of Eddie's best vocal performances in recent memory. That's exactly the sort of thing he should be doing more of.

I think "Dream a Little Dream" is one of Eddie's best vocal performances in recent memory. That's exactly the sort of thing he should be doing more of.

I sing that song to Ellie ever night when I put her to bed, and I totally started that because of Uke songs. He sounds better, though.

I don't think PJ singles have ever done that, even if they tried. The only thing The Fixer had in common with the rest of the album was that it was vaguely poppy.

How could anyone compare this to Brain of J? C mon. This is an average "funny" song.

I hate this type of Pearl Jam. They just don´t get that this "i´ll make music like the music of my favorite bands" doesn´t work at all. Every time they try to hard, they fail. Pearl Jam has been with a lack of personality since Riot Act. That was the last real album. Maybe it wasn´t that good but it did have character and it was unique. The last two, and seems like this one is not going any further, were like a compilation of sound that the guys think that "is cool". And that´s it. There is no urgency or need to create. And that is crap.
Probably I´m just to old school. But this was my favorite band because there was something about them that did matter. Not anymore.

I like the song for what it is and feel the album will be much more than this but yeah Riot Act was their last "real" album with a unique personality and emotion...kinda sucks

It's a fascinating transition.

i mean, the obvious and real answer is he got old, but that's too convenient. i went to delve deeper and really cook up some conspiracies.

I don't buy the "He got old" thing. I just think that he really suddenly wanted to do something different and found the old stuff embarrassing. Some of his fans remained wedded to the old stuff and that's how life goes. Basically, over all, I personally think that their latter work has involved a lot of experimentation into just how to do this kind of music as grown adults, fathers and husbands. And the experimentation is not over. But I would hope that in the next album or two, they will finally have it figured out and we'll have a new kind of Pearl Jam to follow us into old age. I'm still fairly confident that Ed has still (barely) escaped becoming Bono, and for that I'm grateful.

I'm really excited about the variety evident in the clips we have so far. Moody dark ambience, punk / heavy metal, and country (if that video *was* actually PJ, do we know that it was?).

I'm going to try and take this thing one song at a time and keep any specific expectations out of it. The wait will be hard enough without me fucking it up and making it harder.

So far, MYM is good enough that it proves to me this guys still have tricks up their sleeve. They can still do this thing and affect me. My expectations go no further than: I expect a good album.

Maybe after another single or two... but right now, I'm just trying to enjoy MYM and not think too hard about the rest of it.
